Thai troops given the nod for cadet courses in Russia

The Cabinet has approved a plan to send Thai troops to study cadet courses in Russia after President Vladimir Putin considered Thailand a friendly country that can receive scholarships.

Deputy Government Spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said on Tuesday (January 14) that the Cabinet had approved the Ministry of Defence’s proposal for a draft agreement on sending Thai troops to study in the military academy under the Russian Federation's Ministry of Defence.

“The commander of the National Defence Studies Institute under the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters or the authorised representative will sign the draft agreement,” she said.

“However, if the details of the draft agreement need to be changed without affecting any substance stated in the draft, the Ministry of Defence can proceed as appropriate as proposed.”

She explained that the draft agreement aimed to set the guidelines on sending Thai troops for training courses held by the Russian Ministry of Defence.

“The Thai Ministry of Defence will propose the list of training courses to the Russian Ministry of Defence by January 15 every year. Meanwhile, the Russian side will inform the Thai side by June 15 every year on the courses they can support,” she said.

“Thai soldiers chosen to study these courses must pass a preparatory course and undergo Russian language training for 10 months, starting from October every year before taking the cadet courses.”

She added that Russian President Putin had approved Thailand as a friendly country that can receive unconditional scholarships, especially Russian Federation cadet courses, while other courses will be considered case by case.

Interesting. Thai students study English at school for 12 years and most can't hold a very basic conversation. How could they be expected to become fluent in Russian in just 10 months?

  • It's learn or go to gulag. Does wonders to motivation.    I guess the classes they'll be taking are something like 101 Basics of serving oligarchs, torture without leaving marks and how to e

Which was, at the time (the early 1900s), a very different organisation to what it is now, and definitely different to the modern Russian Military Academy!

You never lose Thailand, you only lose your turn.

Which should include learning to read and write the Russian script and conversation in Russian language. Ten months surely not possible, especially when most of the cadets have no interest whatever in learning another language.

Russian soldiers are tough bu##ers !  They are highly trained in Systema which is a brutal combat system. I can't see the Thai guys winning any fights over there. but they might learn to run faster !  Another useless political exercise

Careful Thailand. Your European allies may not appreciate you shooting hoops with the enemy.

The only positive outlook I see is that they return knowing the recipe for borscht.

I love a good borscht but dont use horse meat.

I think it is okay to use horse meat in a borscht, if it has died. What else you gonna do with a dead horse except beat it? Wonder why there aren't any Soi horses in Pattaya.

Sergei Bring, called Russia " Nigeria with Snow". So this country will teach ?

With all the highly qualified generals in the Thai military (is it one for every two hundred members?) Surely they can run their own cadet courses.

Another reason for the US to decrease import from Thailand ...

Putin likes Prayut. Someone he can control. New watch in the mail.

About the only thing I admired in the old Russian army—their border policy: shoot to kill.

Most Europeans don't see Russia as an Enemy.

Even working on the standard minimum 4 to 1 in a fight I can still see the outcome.

A better idea would be a 3 months basic training course in UK for infantry recruits. Two or three good UK army drill pigs for three months would be a real eye opener for them.

Ever polished a dustbin in the guard room??? or 'bumpered' a ceiling???

Cant see them lasting 3 months in the UK, even the army cadets in the UK would run rings around this lot

Prayut Cha-Cha needs to distance his regime from both the ChiComs and the Russcoms.  Thailand’s reputation now at stake.

He'll do exactly the opposite. Those two don't care about a coup or military juntas or whatever. They are used to oppressing their subjects. Others tend to whine about it.

I am probably not allowed to post the link so I won't - but if you look up an article about Gen Apirat chief of the army in the Bangkok Post. he "lashes out at old communists" that are behind all the problems according to him in Thailand. This was on the 12th of Oct 2019.

The war against communists in Thailand lasted from 1965 to 1983....how many ex-pats knew that? Basically the whole time the USA was fighting the Vietcong and the USA was using Thailand as a base to flatten 3 neighbouring countries a guerrilla war was going on in LoS.

Also, the communist party of Siam was founded in 1926 by extreme left wing chinese that had fled China.

So why now, does this junta government lie down like lap dogs to big brother China and seeks help from mother Russia to train the troops?

as with all things reported about Siam.....all very very bizzare....

Oddly, where I work there are Latvians, Bulgarians and Slovakians, all born after

1980, their English isn't too great, but they talk among themselves in Russian.
