Phuket PWA receives B406.9mn for projects to solve water problems

PHUKET:-- Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana today (Jan 15) announced that the Phuket Provincial Office has received a budget of B406.9 million to solve the island’s problems of running out of water supply.

 

Speaking at Phuket Provincial Hall, Governor Phakaphong explained that the budget was given after Phuket office of the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) filed a request with the central government for the funds for three projects.

 

The first project, costing B48.99mn, is to install a 710mm water mains from a “water source” to the pump station at Bang Wad Reservoir and to install a new pump that is able to supply up to 1,600 cubic metres of water per hour, the Governor said.

the latest desalination plants can run on power from solar panels so the cost is on installation and maintenance ...

WHy they dont pay a visit to Israel? THey make millions liters of fresh water from salt water by RO installations. Phuket is in salt water. 

You can have pumps , but if you dont have water, you cant pump.

IF you have a reservoir of water , you can cover it with solar panels on the surface.

Vaporizing will be more limited and you have free power.

And while busy, dig out more of the reservoir, so it can contain more water, now is a good chance.

In the present context the emphatic quote suggests there's something abnormal about the water source.

There are suggestions under Comments in the link that the source is a privately-owned water source that raises legal procurement issues if laws and regulations are not adhered to -  potential collusion and corruption related to water purchase. There needs to be transparency by both the Thai state and Phuket on this "water source."

If the water source is privately-owned, there is also the potential for an inadequate or unproven source to meet project goals - solve island's running out of water supply. The island obviously is running out of sufficient water supply for the island. Yet, this "water source" hasn't been affected as well? Has Phuket/State done any study to confirm the sufficiency of this "water source" that justifies the project cost? No mention of any such scientific investigation or economic analysis.

The water source they plan to tap into is a large canal near Phang Nga. They want to run a pipeline into one of Phuket's dams and thus into the pipes. It was discussed in a thread some months ago.

 

Desalination is not a good option here as it requires an enormous amount of energy for the process, and the salt heavy brine put back into the oceans could have bad effects on the ecology.  Not concerns for places like Saudi.

I agree with you, as you will have a brine back to the oceans. So you should spread it well and or you can make salt winning areas and use the salt to sell. You already have concentrated salt.

Even there are seasalt winning areas in SF, USA. There is a market for it, it seems.

 

However im more concerned about the waste plastic we dump into the oceans. 8000000 TONS of plastic, every year. It doesnt belong there and THAT has great impact on eco system. Plastic islands as big as Texas.

But aslong as we humans have the system where it s al about money, we will have these problems again and again and again. This sytem is out of control and causes the many problems we have.
