Half of trucks checked in Don Mueang spewing pollutants

Random checks were being conducted on trucks using Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in Bangkok on Thursday (January 16).

Sniffing for excessive exhaust emissions were officials from the Traffic Police Division, Pollution Control Department (PCD) and Don Mueang District Office. They spent about two hours flagging down truckers close to Don Mueang Airport.

Twelve of the 25 trucks checked were found to be belching black smoke containing pollutants in excess of safety standards.

PCD environmental specialist Thawatchai Kaewpakdee said the department was empowered under Sections 55 and 56 of Vehicle Act to order the drivers of the 12 trucks to keep them off the road while the necessary engine improvements are made, and that has to be done within 30 days.

Operators of trucks that miss the deadline can be fined up to Bt5,000.

Section 55 ? Yep, sums up exactly Thailand's pollution issues. Laughable.

Check the wheel nuts and brakes at the same time to remove later excuses ????

Not if that's 5000 each time they get pulled over at a checkpoint.

I've got mixed opinion on this one.  I'd agree to keep those trucks out of urban areas, but that's a huge burden to put on families and farmers who can barely afford an aged truck for their livelihood.  And does getting those cars and trucks off the road put more people on scooters with the inherent risks of a grisly death- just because they're poor?

Attempting to control truck traffic is futile and will never work.....trucks are Bangkok' and indeed Thailand' only source of transportation of goods.

Reduce truck travel times and therefore reduce the economy.

This initiative will be short lived once the connected start complaining to their MP mates.

They’d be better served trying to stop all the rubbish burning, if they want to improve the air quality in this country.

They checked 25 trucks to figure out what any 5 year old could tell them? That half the pickups, 6 and 10 wheel trucks in this country have been modified to produce maximum power, black smoke and noise. Thai government solution: stay inside, reduce activities and wear a mask.. that'll fix it.????

Fines do nothing.... just ban them from the road!

The PM openly stated a matter of weeks ago that the owners of poluting vehicles should be locked up....whatever happened to that threat...:whistling:

All talk again

Why is the road tax lower on an older vehicle than a new ,surely a newer vehicle is cleaner ,mine goes down every year ,it should go up

Maybe you did not read the full article. They take the vehicle OFF the road until the repairs are made. IF the repairs are not made, in addition to the penalty of not having the vehicle for the 30 days they are fines 5000BHT - but the vehicle still stays off the road until the repairs are made.

Presumably there is another 5000BHT fine after the second 30 days.

I would have thought that having the vehicle off the road was a pretty good incentive to get it fixed so that it is back on so it can operable and make some money.

The other half isn't road worthy.

They should have these checks up country as well, not just in the Bangkok area.

What about the other half they checked, were they parked with their engine turned off?

12 out of 25 in two hours work on one day, on one BKK roadway.

Job well done... BKK air pollution problem solved. Back to sleep now.

PS-  they didn't actually say what happened with the offending trucks. The PCD staff person said they're EMPOWERED to keep the polluting trucks off the road. But I'll bet, they simply let all of them drive away with a warning to fix their pollution problem or else... And more than likely, there will be no "or else."

and what about the black smog that low so and retarded pickup driver throw when they accelerate ? is it intentional or just because their engine has problems ?

Stevie Wonder  could see how bad it is

Stop all burning everywhere with no exceptions, enforcement, jail time-that would be a good start
