Media frenzy as alleged Lopburi gold shop robber named - he’s a teacher and firearms expert

Alleged perpetrator Prasittichai Khaokaew

Thai media was scrambling for information as national police chief Gen Chakthip Chaijinda prepared to brief the press following news that a suspect has been arrested in the case of the callous Lopburi gold shop heist on January 9th.

Media has named the alleged perpetrator as Prasittichai Khaokaew.

A website lists him as being the director of Wat Pho Chai school in Singburi, a neighboring province to where the crime occurred.

Thai media reported various updates such as police having DNA evidence from sweat deposited at the scene - the Aurora gold shop in Robinson's.

Other media quoted a teacher as saying they were in disbelief and shock and would wait to see what police had to say before making up their mind.

He was described as a friendly man who got along with everyone.

A toddler and two other people were shot dead in the heist that has shocked the nation.

The suspect has also been described as a firearms coach.

Pictures on a Facebook page showed the suspect enjoying dinner with his partner just two days after the robbery as if nothing had happened.

A senior education department official said the suspect would be fired from his position if the charges are proved in court.

The cops stated robbery was not the motive. Seems likely then that one of the victims was targeted. Possibly the clerk who was shot three times.

Being taken to a police safe house where he....

a. was waterboarded for serveral hours.

b. was questioned.

c. tortured.

d. confessed

e. All of the above !

Good that he is locked up. The csi LA page has had the sleuths digging well into this guy's fb uploads.

My gf told me that the Thai news rumour mill has gambling debts as the motive.

If this is in fact the correct guy, he deserves the death row treatment and absolutely no benefits from the pardoning systems.

Going in a shopping mall and spraying bullets everywhere is truly deplorable.

Fatal gold heist a ‘suicide attempt’, suspect allegedly claims

By The Nation

Prasittichai Khaokaew interrogated by the police

Police in Lop Buri claim that Prasittichai Khaokaew, arrested on Tuesday (January 21) in connection with the January 9 robbery of a gold shop in which three people were shot dead, has confessed to the crime, saying stress drove him to seek a way to be shot and killed by police.

But, on the day of the robbery, there were no police near the scene, he allegedly said.

Police said he claimed to have thrown all the gold stolen into a river in Sing Buri.

A close friend of the suspect, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Prasittichai, despite his gentle demeanour, had a bad temper and is deep in debt from betting on football.

He was identified by DNA from sweat left behind at the scene. Last I heard Thailand does not have a DNA crime scene lab.

why would a robber heavily in debt according to a friend throw the  haul into a river, no chance of that, so why would he rob in the first place, and his story ? what a load of dogs dangly bits

Unlike an MP who was guilty of Murder, it took weeks and a directive from some senior bureaucrats before they decided to dismiss him from public duty.

Ah it is now starting to make sense. Remember the talk about "person of influence".  Reports are saying that daddy is a policeman and it might even have been his gun. Mummy was a teacher.

I thought during the investigation that the police knew the person, or had strong suspicions, well before they found him. But they had to make sure they had plenty on him before they went public.

I reckon that they found his getaway bike dumped in a klong. There is a lot of smoke and mirrors still.

This guy is indeed from an influential family. Lots of his posts and pictures speak money.

Yes, a police safe house is not safe for the victim it's safe for the police.
