Parkinson’s: wheelchairs, Segways, and more

Featured Replies

Hi there

Please bear with me I’m trying to auto type and there will be mistakes

First of all I’m in Chiang Mai, But I’m willing to travel

I’d like to try out wheelchairs. I’ve been offered one but it’s a little bit like a hospital wheelchair I figure if I’m going to buy one it might as well be as light as possible so I can be independent and carry it from the car… And I would like To go somewhere where I can try out various types and models with the best variety

Second of all I’ve been told amazingly that segues SAGWAYSSEGWAYS work really well for certain types of disability Even with Parkinson’s where the balance is very bad it compensates for the balance

Is there anywhere in Chiang Mai that suppliers or better rents or better just somewhere I can try them on and learn more

Third of all I’m having trouble just lying in bed and holding my mini iPad

It feels a lot heavier than it used to all of a sudden

I’ve thought about rigging a sprung rope from the ceiling but maybe there’s some sort of stand that will never die for me to lie in bed with pillows and read and type the mini comfortably

Any great ideas for any of these problems would be much appreciated.

Bit out of way, but maybe u can research them first.

One Pharmacy company in Pattaya is called 'Fascino'.

They have a huge area in their main store with hospital and mobility equipment.

Wheelchairs, mobility scooters, upmarket beds etc.

Might be worth a try...might help you.

On the 700 year road,  near to Ruam Chok intersection there is a very large branch of Pharmachoice which seems to sell mostly wheelchairs.

Never actually been in there, only seen it from the road.

It must be very new - it seems to have been built after Google's photovan went past, but it is there, I promise.

In terms of a support for your ipad or whatever device Lazada does list a variety of "Laptop Trays/Desks" that might be of interest.

They also list Segway, manual and  electric wheelchairs in  various formats but servicing on an online purchase could be  an issue.

I tried the Fascino in Suthep Rd CMthey had  a couple of alloy wheelchairs at 8000 and 18000

I believe their big shop nr the station has much more choice and I will visit

I'm afraid what they have will be unsatisfactory.

The Parky's makes my forearms very stiff and even holding my arms out a bit is uncomfortable.

But I'm thinking now of suspending the ipad in some sort of sling from the ceiling, maybe simply made from doubled up bungee cords so it will float in front of me. Kinda neutral buoyancy.

Designs for the iPad holder welcome.

There's deffo one in Suthep Rd CM

Would be interested if and where the large one is and if theyre still going.

Without being morbid I'm thinking there must be secondhand ones coming on the market regularly

Ok, understood.

Another option that occurs to me is one of those adjustable table reading lamps. There are models  which have a clamp mount rather than a fixed  base. Perhaps one of those clamped to a convenient position such as the  headboard or side table? It would provide near neutral load, be positionable and swing away function. Dispense with the  actual  lamp and use the electrical  lead supply to the  battery charger?

Not sure what company you are thinking about, but Fascino has one very large store and 3 big sub stores in Pattaya. Was there yesterday.  Anyway I have given the OP info which is what he requested, so please only post good and correct info.
