HELSINKI (Reuters) - Finland’s woman-led centre-left government plans to nearly double the length of paternity leave to give new fathers the same amount of paid time off work as new mothers, it announced on Wednesday.

Paid paternity leave will be extended to nearly seven months, in line with maternity leave. Around half can be given to the other parent.

Pregnant women are also entitled to a month of pregnancy leave before the expected date of birth.

Minister of Health and Social Affairs Aino-Kaisa Pekonen said the aim of the “radical reform” was both to improve gender equality and to boost a declining birth rate.

“This enables better equality between parents and diversity among families,” she said. She noted that other countries such as Sweden and Iceland had seen increases in their birth rates after offering more leave for fathers.

Finland’s governing coalition is made up of five parties, all led by women, of whom four are under 35 years old. Increasing gender equality has been one of the government’s aims since it took office in December.

It's heavily criticized in Finland, because it basically removes some of the current options and forces fathers to stay home or forfeit part of the leave. That's what you get when you have a leftie government, removal of choice. Next elections will likely bring a landslide victory to the center/right nationalists. True Finns (Perussuomalaiset), opposition party, is already by far the leader in the polls.

Nonsense. It doesn't force fathers to do anything. It increases the amount of leave they can take from 2 months to 7 month. And also increases the allowance for mothers from 4 to 7 months. And allows each spouse to give up to 69 days to the other. Where is the compulsion in this?

Right. How full of oneself can somebody be. You honestly expect me to believe the words of an anonymous poster on thaivisa.com over the words of virtually every media report I can find?

uusisuomi.fi is one of the leading Finnish online newspapers. Go to the source if you want to get the lowdown. Naturally you have to be able to read Finnish. I can.

Again. Why should I care about what an anonymous poster on thaivisa.com claims about a law? Are you the only person in the world who can read finnish? It's a fact that major media sources including the right wing  The Sun clearly disagree with you.

What has my alleged emotional state got to do with the accuracy of drtuner's allegations?

I got news for you. This law was passed by a feminist government. It's clear you don't have a clue about what feminism is.

I guess they have a reproduction crisis. Yeah, it takes two to tango, and there's little incentive for men to take responsibility in this post feminist world. There was a time when a man had to be married even to be considered for promotion; nowadays, who cares?

How about giving men equal rights to child custody?

Nobody wants to touch the feminists with a barge pole.

I always thought it was more the feminists not wanting to reproduce with white guys.

(Although I admit it might just have been me with whom they didn't want to reproduce)

Anyways, no hard feelings, enjoy your house full of cats.

Is there a number of wives limit on that?  I figure three is all you need. I used to be able to get one every two years, but with three wives I’m sure I could do much better.

I have nothing against paternity leave, but I wonder how it will apply to some groups.

For example, if a Lesbian couple have a child, do both of them qualify as mother or is one mother and the other father -- for the purposes of leave?   Is the sperm donor able to take paternity leave?

Does this only apply to married couples, or is the name of the father on a birth certificate enough to allow for paternity leave?

Doesn't the whole idea of giving equal rights to both sexes kind of moot the idea of giving privileges to one?

I am not trying to remove any rights or privileges.   I am not questioning the decision to do so, I am just wondering how it will be applied and to whom.   This is specifically called 'paternity' leave, not parental leave.   So, if there are two females or two males in the relationship, does it apply?   Does it apply to an adoption?

You could look it up. I did and found that it does give equal rights to both members of a couple regardless of gender. No, it doesn't apply only to married couples. This is Finland, for God's sake, not Appalachia.

I agree that it's fit for only the semi-literate. But what's relevant here is that its politics are very right wing and nationalist.

Well, Mr. Bristolboy, after years of hearing from conservatives, I've just gotten used to looking for the 'catch' in any good plan -- I am still waiting for that big tax break I was suppose to get!

Well, since DrTuner lambasted it, that's enough of an endorsement for me.
