Gov’t to initiate tourism promotion measures to counter coronavirus impact

BANGKOK (NNT) - Concerns regarding novel coronavirus and the delay in the fiscal year 2020 budget bill have had a negative impact on the economy. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has ordered the Ministry of Finance to introduce domestic tourism promotion measures and ensure funding for infrastructure investment projects.

Speaking at the Posttoday Economic Forum 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak admitted the spread of novel coronavirus has affected the tourism sector, requiring the Cabinet to take measures to help affected businesses.

He said the Ministry of Finance is now instructed to take additional economic measures through phase four of the Chim Shop Chai campaign promoting domestic tourism. The campaign is intended to distribute money to local communities and help the affected tourism sector.

The DPM said today the government is now on track with several economic reform projects, however cooperation from all sides is required to maintain the strength of the economy, especially financial institutions which should lower their interest rates, as a means of encouraging greater cash flow in the economy.

The private sector is being asked to make more investment in the country to compensate for the expected shortcomings, while the government will be supporting investment projects through the Thailand Future Fund, which allows the general public to purchase shares, serving as their savings and investment at the same time.

On the fiscal year 2020 budget, the DPM said today the government is prepared to disburse the budget with care.

The government has only four months to use the budget. Government agencies have been instructed to ensure their plans are in place, to allow disbursement to be processed immediately after the bill goes into effect.

The Minister of Finance Uttama Savanayana noted today that the Ministry of Finance is able to handle short-term economic effects, while more concrete details of new measures will be announced this month.

If you believe it's possible for this Thai Government to be honest with its people, then you believe there are Pixie's at the bottom of your garden !

  • So they are doing the opposite of containment by encouraging domestic tourism.

Perhaps the health minister could make his own suggestion regarding that - compulsory face masks for foreigners - the return of the man in the iron mask.

They think it is bad now

If they don't start taking this situation seriously it may take a very long time to recover and restore confidence

News coming from China is very grave indeed - they ignored and silenced the Doctor (who has since died of the virus) who gave them an very early heads up in December  and a chance to halt this in its tracks, by covering it up and lying to the public we now see the results

First thing Thailand needs to do is be honest with the public - the only way to stop this is with public cooperation - it is not about face masks - it is about shutting down affected areas and containing the outbreak if necessary - China has isolated huge parts of the country and shut down public transport and told people to stay indoors - Hongkong has closed its borders

Reading the thread is exactly the opposite that these idiots want to do;
promote internal tourism; therefore ask residents of Thailand to mix with those who are potentially infected in Phuket, Pattaya, Bangkok ...and so on ...

They really understand nothing and will never understand anything.

With a few weeks delay, so this measure is totally ineffective; as I often write:
put a bandage on a wooden leg ....would be just as effective

It's way way too late at this point, and how they are acting now is actually bordering on the insane. I'm not sure if they are actually insane, moronic, or simply just greedy; or a combination of all 3. Most other nations don't want Chinese tourists at all, yet Thailand is doing everything to get them to come. Instead of pumping money into tourist attractions and schemes, they need to use that money to fight the outbreak, and raise awareness of how the public should be acting.
My GF shed some light for me without realising it, when I spoke about how the virus is going to evolve in Thailand due to the incompetence of the government, she stated that Thai people like to lead normal lives without worrying, and that their government cares about them. This explains why schools are still not closed, insanity. I knew the level of brainwashing was real, but that really illustrated it to me.

So you want the private sector to invest more and the general public to invest more...and you are doing what again?

Oh, yes Chimp Shop Hi...version 4.0.

In the last week I have been to the Big C Extra Shopping Mall on Pattaya Klang, I could count the number of people on one hand who were wearing masks, farangs or Thais.

And in charge of the promotion will be ... Health minister Anutin Charnvirakul ... that should do the trick!

So, their solution to this problem is to promote domestic tourism? Expecting a population that is now cautious

to leave their houses to go to work or anywhere others might be congregating. Might as well be pocketing the

money they will be requesting from the government/taxpayer for this endeavour. Oh!!

Yep.... some just don't seem to understand what the word "epidemic" means or how it spreads...

but then again they didn't get in their respective positions because of brains or the ability of how to do anything!

Don't they understand "tourism" is finished until the CORONA VIRUS has been completely obliterated. People are not going to go on holiday to any country where there is a higher risk.

Forget about the fact that currently this virus is maybe not that dangerous....its like saying "Officer, I only had one drink"!!

And as for arranging concerts and shows etc...are they mad!  Lets all get together and rub hands!!

They are talking about promoting local tourism while in the middle of a possible epidemic.

So may people just don't get it.

Listen up, listen carefully:

T H A I S  K N O W  B E S T

Best to just shake your head and let them get on with their collective wet-dream. It'll all be alright on the night.

In other words they are hoping the local population don't know the definition of epidemic or pandemic.

Invest in some dodgy investment scheme and the money will likely disappear at the first sign of a market correction.Rice anyone?

Easy to achieve... More quality, more safety, more hospitality...

only to mention some issues ????

The desperation from them is palpable.

Too little to late....

Maybe they can share how much of a discount they got all wearing the same blue penguin suit?

Singapore Government has been around all of the Condos handing out free masks, but in all honesty there aren't that many people wearing them (seen far more people wearing masks on the BTS in Bangkok than I have on the MRT in Singapore).

Weak, weak, weak.  Reads like a plan that took all of 5 minutes to come up with--if that.  Depending on Thais to save the tour industry, especially when Thailand's economy is going to sustain a huge hit, takes clueless to a new level.  Some Thais will be lucky to hold on to their jobs; I doubt many will be spending their precious money on traveling.

Instead, campaigns should be put in place as soon as possible in western countries that Thailand used to draw large numbers of tourists from.   And while you're at it, why not do a crash overhaul of the retirement visa rules and regulations aimed at making it much easier--not harder--for expats to live in Thailand.  Start by eliminating the 90 day reporting, the travel reporting, the second trip to immigration to verify the 800,000 is still in the bank, and the age requirement.  Make the 65,000 baht a month verification much easier, with more flexible options, and standardized among the offices.  Then, go from there.   Time to think outside of the China box.
