The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) has ordered True to compensate its customers in Bangkok after almost an hour of network failure on Tuesday (February 18).

Phichai Suwankitborihan, NBTC’s director of Telecommunication Regulation Office, said on Wednesday (February 19) after a meeting with representatives of True Corporation that the service provider was asked to explain the network failure in Bangkok.

“True informed us that the failure was caused by a router malfunction and lasted only 10 minutes, but our investigation revealed that the network was down for 52 minutes and affected more than 200,000 users in Bangkok areas.”

“NBTC, therefore, has ordered True Corporation to remedy affected users by providing free mobile internet of 500 megabytes and free call of 100 minutes within 24 hours, while the said free services must be used within one day,” he added.

Meanwhile, Waraporn Phatcharapha, deputy director of Government Relations at True Corporation Plc, said that True will send an SMS to affected users to accept the free services and use them within one day. “This incident is not related to True’s operation of the 5G network,” she insisted.

True has not been very good for us here in northern Nan province over the past year but will give them credit for an incident last week. We've had some periodic maintenance outages and last week when I saw the signal on the fibre drop out at 2:30pm I thought it was another. But at 3:30pm not returned. Had the wife call the service centre, she was then connected to a local contact. No maintenance going on, he would come to our home. Less than 30 minutes later we see a True vehicle slowly passing our place and stop 150 meters up the road. He had spotted the cable was down. Turns out the cable had been brought down and snapped by something, likely a truck carting soil from a property in a valley across from us. Wife took him down some cool drinks and by 5:30pm it was all fixed.
