US embassy, Amnesty International oppose dissolution of Future Forward party

 

 

The US embassy in Bangkok has expressed concern that the Constitutional Court’s decision on Friday, to dissolve the Future Forward party, risks disenfranchising more than six million Thai voters who voted for the party in the March 24th 2019 general election.

 

In a statement issued on Saturday, the embassy said “The United States strongly supports democratic governance around the world, and appreciates Thailand’s recent seating of a democratically elected government.  While the United States does not favor or support any particular political party in Thailand, more than six million voters chose the Future Party in March 24 elections.  The decision to disband the party risks disenfranchising those voters and raises questions about their representation within Thailand’s electoral system.”

 

Meanwhile, Amnesty International (AI) called on Thai authorities to reverse the dissolution decision and to restore genuine rights to freedom of expression and association in Thailand.

Ex-NIA deputy chief accuses US embassy of interference in Thailand’s internal affairs

 

 

Thailand’s former National Intelligence Agency deputy director Nanthiwat Samart has accused the US embassy in Bangkok of interfering in Thailand’s domestic affairs over the Constitutional Court’s decision on Friday to dissolve the Future Forward party and to ban its executive committee from politics for ten years.

 

In an online open letter, addressed to the US embassy, Mr. Nanthiwat said that each country has its own history, culture and tradition which does are not necessarily the same as each other’s.

 

“Friendly countries can express their fondness, concern and good wishes toward one another, but must respect each other’s differences and laws, which vary from country to country.  The US judicial system is completely different from that in Thailand.  America must not interfere and refrain from criticizing the law and judicial process of Thailand,” said the ex-NIA deputy chief.

I guess that’s the last reaction big heads wanted or expected. In addition to protest things may get ugly and get ugly fast 

My wishes are for many countries and organizations to loudly express their disapproval with the dissolution of FFP.

 

When the heat gets too hot, get out of the kitchen (or maybe I should say "chow hall" in this instance).

I think that's less likely. I'd have thought a spontaneous protest would have shown genuine feelings.

Sure, there might well be protests organised, but I feel the government will do their best to ignore it.

We'll see. I hope something does happen, but I'm not holding out much hope.

 

There have been plenty of foreign governments giving their opinion on dissolving the FFP.

Unless there are economic sanctions involved, no one in the Thai puppet government will give a sh!t.

Do you think that Prayut, Prawit, Anutin (ai farang) or any other Thai politician in this illegal ‘government’ give a toss about what any country thinks.  No way do they care.

Economic sanctions are definitely possible in the future. Immediately if/when Thai defaults on US airline purchases, but also likely as the true nature of the Thai/Chinese government control and abuse of the Thai people becomes visible in the West.  This will only happen of course, when protests become much larger and louder - which will flow on from the impending economic and Baht collapse.

A rigged election with an election commission and constitutional court that were handpicked by the establishment. This has all the hallmarks of how the Roman emperors would bribe the senate to keep their hold of the empire. That was over 2000 years ago.

Seems they not ignoring it, according to another OP, health ministry said it was a no no due to corona.

 

i do not see it’s just dying off, US has spoken , EU has spoken already ,if anything Gaining momentum.

 

sanctions are also a possibility but depends on response from the big heads and considering their lack Of intelligence , it’s fairly possible

Athenian, Machiavellian, Suppressive, Hypocritical are just a few select words that this and all those people need to hear. But the words Democracy or Democratic should never touch his or their lips. Let the Heat Begin coming from all the Western and Asian developed Nations and International groups as this is a travesty against the Thai people and Young generation who need to take control having their turn at life. Not the Elite and the Military for the farce reasons they want to stay in power. Thailand should be showing the way for being a role model country in the world, but unfortunately the mold needs to be broken before it can move ahead.

This is all much ado about nothing IF the embassy acted in accordance with the direction of the State Department in this statement. We point out out X, they point out Y and thens its business as usual. There will be no sanctions or consequences from the USA. And they Thais will still know where, in the end, their bread is buttered.

Spot on. The headline suggests USA and the UN don't like the demise of Future Forward. Nobody in the government is interested and nobody will do anything about what the USA or the UN thinks. Thailand has been ignoring the rest of the world for decades, nothing happens.

 

There's only one opinion that matters in Thailand and that's the problem, the elephant in the room.

If it gets wider attention after the weekend, it could become significant. At least, added to the virus, shootings etc it would give pause to farangs perhaps planning holidays in LoS.

As others have said, economic boycotts are the only thing that might hurt the [non] junta and the elephant in the room.

No. It's politic to pretend they care, but they don't. There's only 1 opinion they care about and it doesn't come from a foreigner. Not the USA anyway. China perhaps.
