Thai honesty: Taxi driver returns 100,000 baht and gold to grieving Thai family

More than 100,000 baht in cash, gold and a cash check has been returned to a grieving Thai family who left funeral donations on the back seat of a Bangkok cab in the middle of the night. 

 

Honest cabby "Uncle" Niphon Phitakphuban, 70, from Nonthaburi was the hero of the hour. 

 

He had just taken two women and a man to the area near the Ratchawithi Hospital at 4 am. 

 

He drove off but soon realised there was a bag on the back seat. It contained cash in an envelope and another envelope indicating this was part of donations for a funeral of a mother. There was also a cash check from an advertising company and a gold chain.

 

Without hesitation he contacted FM 91 radio. 

 

In the meantime Bunhome Kaewmong, 43, had realised she had left her bag in the cab. It contained donations for the family and a cash check totalling 134,420 baht. There was also a half baht weight gold chain. They reported to Phayathai police.

 

She explained during the return of her bag that she had been with her elder sister and younger brother in the taxi. They had just come back to Bangkok after her mother passed away on February 26th. 

 

She was very grateful to the taxi driver and gave him 5,000 baht as a reward for his honesty.

Why wouldn’t this honest behavior be an honest practice for an honest society?

 

i am always baffled why this culture makes such a big deal of this behavior every time unless they see this as an aberration in their society...

It had been a long time since we had served it.
This kind of story comes up regularly, an evergreen   ( in France a marronnier ), to make us forget things much more serious like the Covid-19 or mortality on the roads of Thailand ...

Oh wait I know why .. it's because every once in a while there is an honest cabbie that will do the right thing. It's good for tourism. 

 

Not that there's not a lot of honest people in Thailand but it would be really interesting to know how many people that are disillusioned from a long flight or simply feeling out of their element, maybe even had a few too many to drink that left their bag in a car. With a crapload of money in it.

 

Would be nice to see a Thai taxi driver Forum that says things like "I just made 100K baht off my last fare" wink wink

VARY THE AMOUNT,???? you gotta be joking, that would require a serious amount of thought.

His boss said use the 100.000 sum, so thats what he did, cannot change what the boss said, as he would lose face.

Couldn't they find a foreigner who is willing to forget some money in the taxi.

If they give me 10% of their 100.000 baht I will forget 90.000 in a Thai cab, 5555.
