Tattoos: 'The more I have, the more confident I feel'

You probably know Post Malone for two things: massive hit singles and having loads of tattoos - some on his face.

He's been chatting about his body art in a new interview, saying his tattoos come from "a place of insecurity".

"Where I don't like how I look, I'm going to put something cool on there," the rapper told GQ Magazine.

"I can look at myself and say, 'You look cool, kid,' and have a modicum of self-confidence when it comes to my appearance."

The 15 million USD he has made so far will probably help him get used to the fact you consider him a loser ????

I'd never heard of him before either & not a tat lover.

I had never heard of him either.  Looking at the photos, I assumed that he was a female to male transgender rapper.  So...google to the rescue.  Handsome chap.

The world is becoming more and more freaky each and every day.

Since I'm losing a bit of my hair I think I'll get a full-blown tattoo of hair for my skull. Nothing to do with being insecure. Just trying to fit in.

I gotta admit I’m a bit confused by it too.  Of course...you can’t knock success, but all the artists like Lil Xan, Tekashi 69 et al.  Yup...I don’t get it.  More power to em.

Whilst I’m not against tattoos ( I have a few ) having a tattoo that cannot be covered up by a shirt or long trousers is definitely next level !!

People have to understand that while that “ cool “ tat might seem great at the time, several years later or in certain situations might just cause you embarrassment.

Seen plenty of great tats that I would have died for in my youth and plenty that obviously seemed like a good idea at the time but now ... hmmm...... not so much !!

( yup, speaking from experience ).

Seems like they are in fashion and kids are gonna follow their idols, expect to see more to come.

I have a couple too but have a golden rule, "Never have a tattoo that can't be covered up by a pair of budgie smugglers".

He'll regret his mistake when he grows up.

Interesting the comments about 'success' and not being a loser etc etc., by this I mean we seem to default (a lot of the time) to how much money a person has as a measure of success. I look at his image and while I rejoice in being yourself whoever you are I have an overwhelming sense of Wow! He's really trying way too hard! I imagine also that he is surrounded by people who wouldn't know 'genuine' if they tripped over it every single morning.

The "Stay Away" tat is simply redundant.

It seems some people have tattoos and others have something like "LOOK AT ME!" on their body.

It's their body and they can do with it whatever they want. But maybe some of them will find out that not everybody is open minded about lots of "art" on their bodies.

When I was a kid tattoos were the domain of whores, criminals, sailors and south sea cannibals. Since then they have gone from the margins to main-street.

The theme of the article is 'solving self-esteem issues' or 'overcoming insecurity and gaining confidence'.....by way of adornment and costuming. In short, a form of “non-conformist-just-like-you” consumerism.

The tattoo-adornment craze is especially telling. It’s one thing to get some tattoos with the idea that you are artfully expressing something. It’s another thing to deploy them around your body parts as though you were slapping decals on a 1989 beater car. Randomly assigned (as if by lottery) to visible flesh on necks, boobs, sides of heads, knuckles, feet et...

The objective: to look as ridiculous as possible and yet give off a vibe of unpredictable danger and violence by looking like extras who wandered away from the latest Road Warrior location shoot — semi-hominid creatures with strange loping gaits, arresting hair-dos, and enough tattoos to qualify them for harpoon duty on Herman Melville’s Pequod

I find it rather disturbing to see young men with such a desperate and deprived view of their own value.

For more than one generation it has been difficult for young males to develop successfully into men. They even dress like babies at 25. Hence, the clown-wear costuming. By this I mean a pant garment designed to hang somewhere around mid-calf, instantly transforming a normally-proportioned adult male into a stock slapstick character: the oafish man-child.

The complete outfit (inspired by prison culture first, then Hip-Hop,gangster rap culture later) which has (oddly) not changed in quite a few years (suggesting the tragic trajectory we’re on), includes the ambiguous long-short pants, giant droopy T- shirt (four-year-olds have proportionately short legs and long torsos), “Sluggo” style stubble hair, sideways hat (or worn “cholo” style to the front ), and boat-like shoes, garments preferably all black, decorated with death-metal band logos, optional.

You can see, perhaps, how it works against everything that might suggest the phrase: “competent adult here.” Add a riot of aggressive-looking tattoos in ninja blade and screaming skull motifs and you get an additional message: “socio-pathic menace, at your service.” Finally, there is the question: just how much self-medication is this individual on at the moment? .....I give you: young manhood. All set in a porn-saturated total immersion huckster hologram , populated by depressed, overfed clowns bedizened with sinister tattoos, pretending to be Star Warriors. No generation ever seen in human history ever laid such a disappointing egg. Only to have it fry on the sidewalk.

I'm sorry, but they just look like a generation of goners. Surely the levels of clinical depression are high out there, and a lot of our fellow humans are suffering profoundly inside - but is acting like killer-clowns the only option?

What interests me is the indignation my attitude provokes from the tattooed people and hip-hop cloths people...that whole cohort of young people, its as though they are saying "we have every right to present ourselves this way,we like it, it makes sense to present ourselves this way,so don't get down on us,we feel good doing it this way".... well ya , if you are facing a very uncertain destiny and you are very insecure and your society is not giving you much to feel hopeful about nor preparing you for the kind of life you will be facing in your later decades of life, then sure, present yourself as a violent-clown.

This brings us to the flip-side of confidence; insecurity. Young people today have a lot of reasons to be insecure. Its very hard for more and more to imagine any kind of plausible career for themselves. A lot has been foreclosed to them, very little possibility of finding blue-collar work paying a decent wage and very few jobs that are even appealing to a young man.

Vocational options these days tend toward corporate slavery of one kind or another. Flipping burgers for a despotic fast food chain while sliding daily, into permanent debt-slavery.

Sign of the times; grown men swarm in the unemployment offices wearing sideways hats and butt-crack trousers. Why not just tattoo a message on your forehead that says: "Moron For Hire"?

Judging from the sheer number of tattoos-per-capita, one might think that a certain tattoo saturation point has been reached. The time may be ripe for an obvious upstart in a tattoo removal business....mmm...I've got the name for it too...The Fool I Used To Be -Tattoo Removal & Free Fashion Counselling !!

This is pure gold.  You should submit this to every major newspapers op-ed department....although sadly, they would find a way to spin it on you branding you as a judgmental, sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic (am I missing anything?) horrible human being full of hate.
