Happy to see a spark of common sense has found its way into thinking. And given its current water shortage issues, saving water at the same time as preventing a possible spread of the virus, really do

  • Can't stop it?  Turn it into a political rally and see how quickly it is stopped.

And I strongly suspect that despite their best efforts it will be a war zone out there, pretty much as usual. Thais and crazy tourists won't let a little thing like the threat of death slow them down

Strange, for all that is inconvenient the authorities are unable to handle it, the police in Thailand do not deserve to be called a POLICE FORCE!

Not over Songkran - unless they've got a water cannon.

They have, believe they have quite a few.

Professional Songkran revellers!

Khao San Road's event - at least in terms of a water fight - could yet go ahead after a business leader suggested the authorities might be powerless to stop it

A business leader cares not for public health... only profit!

The authorities have the power to stop anything!

Already booked and paid for my annual Songkarn escape week, doh doh....

Permanently cancel this disgusting exchange of toilet water debauchery. Thailand has moved into the modern era in many ways but Song Kran is a third world throw back that should be eliminated.

There are two Songkrans. The one you refer to is the water fight that we see. It is a relatively recent phenomenon and was 'invented' in Chiang Mai as a tourist attraction in the 1950's or 60's. It then spread throughout Thailand and became world famous. Most SEA countries have similar celebrations, and have had for a very long time, but most people are ignorant if this.

The other Songkran that many never experience has been around for time immemorial, and that's not going to stop any time soon.

But he said that it was a public space and people could not be stopped from throwing water at each other.

Yes, the desire to throw water in a complete strangers face runs very deep in backpacker. Very hard for them to overcome such an ingrained instinct.

Instead there will be small scale events that hark back to Thailand's earlier days when Songkran was a quiet cultural event rather than a water fight.

This is what it should be every year

You can bet your *** if this were a protest they could stop it.

Thailand will get what it deserves with this virus as will every other country who is too relaxed.

And all guns full of grey water and <deleted> - what possibly go wrong!

Khao San business leader Sanga Reuangwattanakul told a show on PPTV discussing the severe economic fallout from the effects of the virus outbreak that no formal events are likely to take place there on stage.

The severe economic fallout from not having the events will probably be on par with those fearfully projecting a virus outbreak.

Can't individuals enjoy life without over indulgence, acting or becoming crazy, out of control and violent?

WHAT HAPPENED TO 'RESPECT FOR ONE ANOTHER?!'

Why waste precious water in such a place that relies on it so much? Beyond me...

Life is not that good for humans in a country that persistantly blows such a small trumpet...Priorities tend to take second place after greed and money, as usual...

But tourists wouldn't get involved in that so they wouldn't come on holiday to Thailand which makes TAT tell more lies about the tourist numbers and less tourist income all round.

Overpopulation happened. That's the reason why urban areas are less "respectful" than sparsely populated tundra. When there's few people, you have to get along.

common sense down the brain...
