Police announce measures against COVID-19 spread from arrivals

BANGKOK(NNT) - The Royal Thai Police has announced strict screening of people entering Thailand by land, air and sea in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Particular emphasis is being put on people arriving from the major threat countries of China, South Korea, Italy and Iran.

The Deputy Commander of Immigration Police Division 2, Pol Col Choengron Rimpadee, elaborated that measures being put in place will include inspection of aircraft seats, and includes the division of individuals by risk with the first group to be those who overstayed their visas, who will be questioned and checked for symptoms before being released to return home and monitored for 14 days. The second group is Thai tourists returning home and foreigners, who will have to leave contact information. If any individuals later show symptoms, those sitting near them on the arrival plane will also be tested.

On why police have not requested South Korea to quarantine Thais who overstayed before releasing them for the trip home, Pol. Col. Choengron said it was up to the discretion of the country. He said the embassy has been asked to accommodate those being quarantined and airlines have been urged to help in separating risk cases. Passengers later found to be ill will incur a fine payable by the airline.

Pol Lt Gen Witoon Nitiwarangkul, a lead physician at the Police Hospital, says that of 31 people who sought testing for COVID-19 at the facility, only one tested positive, a Chinese citizen from Wuhan province. The patient has been cured and allowed to return home. Medical personnel have been told to exercise strict precautions, and plans have been set for a third phase of the spread.

Deputy police spokesman Pol Col Krissana Pattanacharoen urged people returning from COVID-19-risk countries to have a sense of social responsibility and observe a 14-day quarantine period at home. They can protect others by wearing a protective mask. He believed social pressure will make them more responsible. Police officers have been working actively to screen and monitor passengers arriving in the country and arrest vendors hiking the price of masks. So far, more than 50 vendors have been arrested.

"And that, children, is China, the country where that bad, bad virus originated," explained geography teacher Kannika while pointing at the north pole. "As you can see, it's right next to Thailand." (

Seems like this patient's travel/contacts while in Thailand could be shared? Followed up on?

Phew. I feel so much better knowing this.

One positive patient from Wuhan, 50 bad vendors.

On the plus side, they're not using the SWAT team in the photo anymore.

What about all those that went to the loo after the infected guy went in and got the virus and passed it onto those sitting next to them ?

2 days ago, PM assures that Korea will quarantine them for 14 days before sending them back.

We all knew it was BS.

Immigration Police confirms !

Taking their temperature?

"elaborated that measures being put in place will include inspection of aircraft seats, "

Facepalm factorized by the the annual production of rice (in kilos), and multiplied by the number of beers sold in 1 day.

This virus gives opportunities to all the maniacs with an uniform to... show off in front of camera and throw out their inane and pseudo "ideas".

Seems like that and a questionnaire.

Not to mention the cabin crew. . . and the luggage handlers. . . and the immigration and check-in staff. . . and waiters and counter staff in the passenger lounge shops and restaurants. . . and the loo cleaners and taxi drivers. . . and. . . and. . .

Oh, my God - we're all doomed!

Saw a tourist in the airport yesterday, who was nearly quarantined because of sunburn.

They didn't remove her, but started an interrogation right next to the queue.

I arrived Suwanabhumi at 1230 ish on Saturday 06 MAR 20. No entry precautions at all, some staff wearing masks, all IOs that I could see also wearing masks but that is sensible given face-to-face with arrivers.

Did you come from a high risk country?

So does this mean the police are now in charge.

Wonder how anutin will react to that?

Been there done that, my Thai DIL's elder brother is a middle aged full on know all / know nothing ladyboy who tries to dominate every conversation.

He's adamant that Germany is immediately above Thailand. Therefor because it's the next country Thai folks don't need a visa to enter Germany.

Another family member showed LB her Thai passport showing visas, he's adamant it's a mistake.

My Thai son and his Thai wife (my DIL) showed him a bigger size professional globe of the world highlighting where Thailand is and where Germany is.

He's adamant the globe is wrong.

Why would Sth Korea take on all the organization and costs of quarantining of these Thai folks for 14 days.

IMHO Sth Korea would be keen to see them gone as quickly as possible.

Seen as they know how to cope on the roads of Thailand; it promises dark days

There is proactivity, which is what needs to be done where actions are taken beforehand. There is reactivity, where government bodies react to a situation, and then there is Thai reactivity, which is to react 2 weeks after the doc has smacked your knee with a medical hammer.

That right there is a reason to deny travel to anyone they want.

There's no way South Korea are going to allow any of these overstayers back in, they're lying about that.

Thai woman are already singled out and interrogated if they're relatively young and reasonable looking - they're looking for hookers and find plenty of them.

They also interrogate the occasional Thai 'TV star' about their travel plans which has made the news here in the past.

all saying different things.... confusion reigns!

Yes, without a doubt 6 weeks too late!

I reckon they've been hanging out at the same barber shop for 6 weeks!

Of course they won't be. Anyway, they're Thai, why don't they just work in Thailand from now on? Currently, nearly every laborer position is taken by Burmese or Cambodians. Might make the 'ghosts' feel a little awkward, that in their own country, 90% of laborers are foreigners. But if they hadn't skipped their country for South Korea,Thailand wouldn't be forced to import it's foreign labor from abroad.
