BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's cabinet on Tuesday approved plans to postpone next month's Thai New Year holiday and to close schools to limit the spread of the coronavirus, a government spokeswoman said.

The approvals followed a series of plans announced on Monday to close schools, bars, movie theaters, cockfighting arenas and other entertainment centers as well as postpone the Thai New Year holiday, or Songkran, which falls between April 13 to 15.

"The cabinet approved that the Songkran holiday be postponed and schools closed," Ratchada Thanadirek, the government's deputy spokeswoman, told Reuters.

She added that closures of entertainment venues would be up to the discretion of each provincial governors, adding that more details would be available later.

Schools are on holiday now until middle of may.

There is no date on closure or possible reopening. Therefore it is a little vague.

Government schools?  Private schools?  International schools?
Yesterday I noticed that one of these daft announcements said that International Schools may be ordered to close - guess that's because most of the others are on holiday but it wouldn't hurt to be a bit less vague.

So no days off in April, have to keep working until the Gov says we can have the Songkran holiday ?

That seems to be correct.

Most primary and secondary schools are closed anyway and the new academic year will/might start in middle of May.

But that's of course not sure. Depending on the visus activity.

My personal thanks fo to the Chinese government that died all to keep the disease under the carpet.

Not international schools.

...the Minister of Education’s family owns one of the biggest international schools outside of bangkok. No conflict of interest there then...

Why is that a conflict of interest? He has closed his own school down.

Yes they are - closed until further notice

Yup. Got the email an hour ago, 14 days at first and then until further notice. What a joy setting up a remote learning hub at the house for our three kids, not. It is what it is.

What level of education? The flag up ceremony, boy scout and various other "activities" could easily be scrubbed.

Being able to sing Chaat Thai will probably be enough to get a diploma at the end of M6.  What's a few less months of school in the grand scheme of things?

I work from home - next month is going to be brutal.

Got a PC setup behind mine for my 10 year old. The 17 year old is in the last few months before his IB finals... That's more of a worry....

a case by case decision making process then, pending the individual size of the brown envelope.

The whole brown envelope remark never gets old does it?
