Education Minister Natthaphon Teepsuwan has ordered all schools nationwide to closed from March 18 onwards, in order to tackle the spread of Covid-19, said the ministry's permanent secretary Prasert Boonrueng today (March 17).

“Taking into consideration the well being of students, we urge all educational institutions under the ministry, both government and private , to close temporary from March 18 onwards” he said.

“Music schools, tutoring schools, and international schools must also be closed until the further notice” he added.

The permanent secretary explained that any private school which violates this announcement will have its licence confiscated, while the management of government schools will be disciplined for the same violation.

Village school closed since yesterday.

Same in the wife's village.. and not a Covid-19 infection in sight yet. However, I expect that will change when the hundreds of ex-villagers who have or will soon loose their jobs come home until things get better. BTW, people she talks to say that as far as they are concerned Songkran will go an as normal.

The jobless/unemployed are free to throw around water.

They don't depend on public holidays.

The traditional Songkran procedures within the family might suffer as those who have a job can not come home to visit.

Point taken, but many people from our village (and I suspect the rest of rural Thailand) don't have secure jobs that tie them to the city. They work in the tourism and "entertainment" sectors and a lot of these are already back home after having been laid off (no pun intended).

Closing schools may appear a good idea but the UK has taken a much more nuanced approach.  Closing schools means all those kids are stuck at home and older family members will have to look after them, many will  be workers in the hospital and other areas for example who will be needed as the situation worsens. Also kids, who if infected get fewer symptoms, but can expose older grandparents who are at risk.  This is a good example of the rule of unintended consequences.
