PM ready to close Thai borders to entry if virus situation worsens to Stage 3

Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said today that his government is ready to close the country’s borders to all foreign arrivals, if the COVID-19 pandemic worsens to Stage 3.

The Prime Minister visited the command centre managing the COVID-19 situation today, to monitor operations and to get updates on the virus situation. The centre is located at Government House.

Regarding the border measure, the Prime Minister said that the word “lockdown” had been widely misused, citing the action taken by Buri Ram and Uthai Thani to screen all arrivals in the provinces,  which is a tough action that does not equate a “lockdown”.

Meanwhile, PM’s Office Minister Tewan Lippatapallop said today that he will discuss a proposal, from the National Office of Buddhism for all temples, to organize a nationwide ceremony to pray for Thailand and the Thai people, with the Sangha Council this Friday.

The prayer ceremony is tentatively scheduled for March 25th, starting at 4pm, and the event will be broadcast live on NBT and MCOT TV channels.

yes ... i agree , the last few weeks have obviously been taking their toll on him.

He must work hard every day with meetings and speaking in public outings so as such he would need to take precautions for any flu or similar.

Likely as not its probably at that stage already given its proliferation pattern in other countries .. It was all part of the sham in Thailand that they had to maintain the public face that it was not serious and they had it sussed with some in power even suggesting it would be under control in the next month or so .. But reality the was always going to be different once it started to proliferate hence the increasing panic within Gov the last week or so .. From here on in the best policy for any Government but especially this one should be one of honesty and transparency .. Continuing with this saving face posture is only going to come back and haunt them if it gets really out of hand ..

If this happens, border runners wont be able to run anywhere. Only options will be fly back to their home country (if they can) or forced overstay, unless the govt gives them continual emergency extensions.

With a long and porous Border with Burma i would like to know how the intend to stop people coming and going ?    Impossible in my opinion and then there is always the bent Officials at the Border.

IMO no-one will be prevented from leaving Thailand, just returning.

Thai nationals will probably be allowed to return with some sort of mandatory quarantine rather than the voluntary effort that failed. Foreigners simply won't be boarded on the dwindling flights or turned back at land borders.

As for the foreigners who's very existence in Thailand is predicated on frequent border runs and similar 'refresh' measures, better make a conscious effort to keep tabs on what your home nation is doing with regard to the inevitable 'rescue' flights. Keep in mind that the deeper into this contagion the world progresses, the higher the likelihood that you will need to be quarantined after any flight or border crossing.

And then stop giving extensions to permission to stay and unleash the immigration police with their BMW on a The Purge type of hunt for farangs. Yeee-haw, get 'em!

It will possibly effect them on return to their home and being quarantined. That is the risk if it hits phase 3 here.

The PM's official speech the other night, as translated into EN, included the following reference, applying right now at Stage 2:

Quote

Thai people staying overseas are urged not to return to Thailand until the situation improves.

Be interesting to see what they're saying to Thai expats when Stage 3 arrives.

The headline is at complete odds to the story itself.

I said the same thing at dinner with my family last night as well. Maybe a bright side to getting him and his clowns out.

Get over yourself, could you not find anything else to take exceptiin to?

Planes will be severely reduced and if available, they can fly out. May be put restrictions with a medical certificate. Trips will become more expensive.

When it will reach Phase 3? India closed its border when they had around 30 cases and at least for now seem to be containing it with less than 0.1 cases per million population.

Hopefully he only means incoming people. Not a lot of point banning people who want to leave unless they are showing signs of infection.

When it comes to hope and Thailand, i think it's a case of 'Abandon hope all ye who enter here'.

Officially at phase 3. I believe it was at that point quite some time ago already.

"if" is inappropriate because it will happen sooner or later.
With such a little intelligence it is now that all borders must be closed as so many other countries have already done.

Too bad for Thai people who work or are on vacation abroad and too bad for tourists who have known for a long time what they risked by wanting to leave their country at all costs .

We, the farang who live here, it will not change anything for us as for the 68 million Thai people who live around us.
