Thais told to stay home to lessen burden of medical personnel

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha has urged Thais to stay at home and avoid travelling to other provinces following a Public Health Ministry announcement today (March 20) that the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases had soared to 322 , said Tewan Liptapanlop, head of Prime Minister's Office.

 

Meanwhile, daily face-mask production has increased to 2,280,000 pieces. Tewan said people should stop hoarding the item as it is now an illegal act.

 

In regard to putting Bangkok under lockdown, the premier said it would not be a solution to the virus outbreak. He asked people to stay home, which in turn would free up more medical personal to focus on tackling the virus and treat the infected, according to Government spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat.

 

Dr Yong Poovorawan, a virologist at Chulalongkorn University, said Covid-19 is a new disease which has now spread to more than 150 countries. Government needs to plan for the long-term in dealing with the pandemic, he added .The government will purchase more medicine for treating patients in serious condition.

Tell that to the Thai company ready to ship 3+ million of them to the U.S., and whatever anonymous Thai govt. officials that have apparently approved the shipment.

These are people who fill up hospital waiting areas when they have the common cold. What's worse is the doctors presribe them antibiotics because, get this, they don't want the patient to lose face.

 

Asking them not to inundate the hospital is like asking them not to drive up the wrong side of the road, or not to sit in the back of pickups - Not Gonna Happen. ????

The only way this will end is in tears for a lot of people. I read a report tonight on projected numbers here in Thailand that was pretty scary.

 

If nothing is done now, like a lock down of certain areas, these figures may come true. Telling people to just stay at home is not going to work. The cat is out the bag and I think only tough measures in the future are going to be able to restrain things to a manageable degree.  

 

Just letting in the Chinese willy nilly like they did was just a recipe for disaster. If China did not lock down the Tour Groups coming in, they would have still been arriving. Just plain Greed. If this blows out exponentially the hospitals are going to be crushed. Biggest problem is most Thais are not ready for a rather long lock down. Nearly all my Thai friends have only limited funds on hand and need to work. I understand they want everyone still working and being able to survive, but if this does blow out of control it is going to take much longer to recover if the hard yards are not done now.

 

I might be wrong. We all might be wrong but I look at China, Italy and Spain and it does not garish me much hope. They have had to do hard yards. My home country Australia has just closed it's borders. The financial loss for us Aussies is just going to be telling for years to come. What it is telling me if Australia is going to such extremes to limit the curve, they must know something we don't know.

 

My family and I will self isolate here in Thailand for the time being. If I am wrong, it is only a month or two and we will see a clearer picture. Until then, I will take note of what the professionals are saying and lay low. Got lots of Television shows I have been putting off for years to watch.

Good point! 

Thailand (0,004 not 4.0) is going down the drain. Only advanced, well functioning countries, are going to come out of this still standing.

That number is not a great burden on the healthcare system.  The concern is that the number can rapidly ramp up to tens of thousands.  Italy went from 80 reported cases to 30,000 in about a month.

Roi Et, Kalasin, khon Kean, Buriram etc...it's everywhere. Either way  much bigger numbers than they are letting on. And when the money goes this 'mai phen rai' culture has met its match with the chinese Flu.

Yup and i just read that the virus is much more dangerous in area's with air pollution...like italy they stated.

 

Well Thai air is much more polluted so if that's all true we should have had many more casualties already....

Some people say the published numbers of infected people may not 100% accurate....
Even in high developed countries it is not so easy to get tested for Corvid 19 as the test capacities are very limited.

Export shipments are part of long standing supply contracts.

If Thailand refuses to honour those agreements, it will see itself cut off from future supply agreements and denied assistance when the vaccines and medications are made avialbale. Thailand has sourced all of its novel  medical treatments and medications from the west, not  China and certainly not Thailand.

 

The supply agreements were structured to allow for international emergencies and pandemics, so either Thailand failed to consider that or screwed up.

They aren't - it's the exponential spread of the virus that is the concern and one that many aren't grasping.

 

Here’s a simple illustration. Suppose you have a 3 acre lake and 1 x 3 inch invasion of lily pad gets in. It reproduces daily (so 2x per day). The lake will be full of these lily pads in 48 days (and say kill all the fish).

 

How many days until the lake is half full of lily pads? People will guess anything like 24 to maybe 40; but the right answer, counter-intuitively, is 47 (since it doubles every day)

 

To further explain the exponential growth and how it is all compressed into the last few days :

 

At 40 days, the lake is only ~1/256th or 0.4% lily pads barely visible. Although 40 days into the 48 day total timeline, there’s no clearly visible sign of an actual crisis.

 

Then the reality of doubling hits:

o 41: 1/128th of the lake is covered
o 42: 1/64th – probably now starting to be apparent
o 43: 1/32nd – obvious to all
o 44: 1/16th – Clearly a growing problem
o 45: 1/8th – Oh my gosh!
o 46: 1/4th – Where did that all come from????

I'm pretty sure Thailand has been boasting lately about expecting a big shipment of (as yet unproven for CV) anti-viral medicines from China, and likewise has been claiming they'll be getting some kind of huge amount of masks from their Chinese friends. As reported here on TVF.

I'm wondering how many cases of infected people and deaths they would have if the politicians would have done their job correctly? 

It was only a week ago when a tourist from Hong Kong made a drug party ( they smoked one cigarette) and drank from one glass when 14 people got infected.

 

They didn't call them prostitutes, they said they were freelancers who usually do an office job to make it sound good. 

 If one infects 14, at the same time, how many of these Batwuhan tourists had infected Thais when it was already close to a pandemic?

 They thought it's better to take their money than protecting all of us from infected people.

 

Would we do such a job, they would fire us.

Where are the consequences? 

 

 

 

Perhaps as paying guests we should all be glad that at present it' Thais go home, not falang go home.

 

Looking at the food fights in stores across so called developed nations, the queues for guns in USA all in all I'd sooner be here dead or alive.

 

Great thing about reincarnation can visit wife as a ghost without a visa.

Reincarnation would give you a real body where you could have real fun.

 

But being a ghost would be nice to see and hear what wife does and say after we left the scene.

I wonder how much government money was spent making a colour coordinate wardrobe with that mask ????

It’s all very sad. I’ve been staying home and  been very OCD with my hand washing and personal hygiene. I’m fortunate I can work from home and actually like being home. I just feel depressed for people who live day to day and can’t afford not to work. They can’t afford to just stay home and see it out. Not just in Thailand but my home country and all over the world. 
 

I hope the government here can work out a temporary state-run salary for workers who aren’t being paid.

Plotting the daily reported case on a graph show exponential increase. It does show the trajectory of the future numbers.
