Thailand's Covid-19 cases might almost double in a few days: dean

Thailand's Covid-19 cases might almost double in a few days: dean

Covid-19 cases in Thailand might jump to 2,000 people within two weeks, Prof Dr Prasit Watanapa, dean of the faculty of medicine, Siriraj Hospital said during a press conference about the Covid-19 test kit on Friday (March 27).

He said that currently, Thai people can be divided into three groups:

The first group is people who do not have symptoms and do not have risk of infection. He recommended not seeking any examination and to remain indoors in their house.

The second group is people who have risk of infection including those who returned from overseas, boxing stadiums, risky locales where Covid-19 cases were discovered. He recommended that they see a doctor.

“They have to undergo 14 to 21 days self-quarantine if the examination shows negative result, while hospitals can handle patients only one week because the number of Covid-19 is increasing every day.” Prof Dr Prasit said.

The third group is people who have both symptoms and risk of infection in which case he advised them to receive treatment at hospitals.

Prof Dr Prasit said that even if only 10 people still socialised, they could lead to 67 million people getting infected.

“The number of Covid-19 cases in both Bangkok and other provinces hit 1,000 people, while Malaysia hit 2,000 people,” he said.

“If we do not stop the spread, there might be a shortage of medical teams and supplies, while the death toll would rise. If one person in a medical team gets infected, they must undergo 14 days quarantine.”

He said that some of Thai people do not have discipline especially those who returned to their hometowns, so he expected that the number of Covid-19 cases may rise to 2,000 people within a few days.

“The number of Covid-19 cases may be stable for 3-4 days, but we expect that the number would jump within two weeks,” he said.

“We are still at risk, so there is a chance that the number of patients will increase, while patients may have more severe symptoms.”

He added that this week alone, Siriraj Hospital had used 200 personal protective equipment a day as the number of patients is increasing.

“Countries worldwide need medicines and supplies, so all we need to do is reduce the usage of medicines and supplies as much as we can,” he added.

Everyone departing BKK and Pattaya, taking the virus with them, to spread all over the country. Thailand could be in serious trouble.

I live in a small village in Buriram province. Currently I am at day 10 of a 14 day isolation. I have been informed that 18 people have returned to the village, in addition to me, all are currently in self isolation for a 14 day period.

The isolation is monotored by the village head and health care volunteers. Everyone, I am informed ia complying.

I doubt that there are many test centers in Isan, so we will never get a true number regarding the impact of the jobless returning to their family villages...

The only loophole holding Thailands number back is the limited testing...which suits the Government narrative for the moment.

The numbers make no sense anyway...look at the exponential pattern of any other country and Thailands fudging becomes very apparent.

To much speculation. We know it will be worse before it gets better. Let just hope it doesn't effect us.

Take Thailand's current figure and multiply by around x100. Unless the country is populated by androids (no puns, please :whistling:), it is illogical that current stats are so low.

Thailand the exceptional country ...

My understanding is that, once testing gets properly under way, the numbers infected double about every 3 days. If I've got that right, then 9000 by mid-April is way lower than we can reasonably expect.

On the other hand, as most people infected recover over time, then gradually the number of CURRENTLY infected (ie infected minus cured = currently infected) will start to flatten out and ultimately diminish, as has happened in China, Sth Korea, Singapore, Taiwan.

But that's probably 2-4 months away in Thailand because of government incompetence & malpractice and lack of self-discipline amongst the people . Meanwhile, the numbers are about to explode, I should think (always assuming they are not hidden from us for our own good).

Group 1 : No symptom + No risk

Group 2 : Risk only

Group 3 : Risk + Symptoms

What about symptoms only ? At 1000 confirmed cases they should acknowledge that the virus is widespread and every place is a risky place.

I don't understand why everyone has to go to hospital,if only mild symptoms no point in going, all that will happen is you will spread it.

Of course if symptoms escalate then go

2000? Lol That is absolutly nothing...

At the end of the sentence I would add just like Western countries due to their arrogancy, lying, cheating, and obfuscation.

What's the population of Thailand?

With 100 cases reported everyday maybe not. It still seems that the spread in tropical countries is somewhat slower than in colder countries. Or there is a limited testing happening in tropical countries.

It's strange tha every reported case is hospitalized in Thailand. And from what I"ve heard they are given a mix of antiviral medicine that causes serious side effects, like vomiting and lack of appetite.

Not when it comes to saving lives in Thailand it's not.

Can u tell us how the people came to your village?

travelling alone ?

i think not!

so people infected continue to travel on public transportation!

infecting others!

i just heard about a Brit in Vietnam kept in hospital for 3 weeks, covid 19 positive but no symptoms, he should be able to self isolate out of hospital, makes you suspect money is a motive, i hope Thailand isn't the same

They don't want to tell that group to go get tested since the number who are positive would skyrocket.

Once the production of amulets gets fully ramped up then we can feel safe.

I'm afraid that's the 'me' attitude that has made this worse. Sure I fear for my family but the crux of the matter is not to spread it. I remember asking someone many years ago when I was in Japan. Saw people wearing masks. I asked why. Answer: They have a cold and don't want to give it to anyone else. Thinking about others.

An almost perfect provision of information on which  to  base a personal  mind set on  how to  protect the self and ultimately personal  mindset on  perception of self as  part of society.

Mask is to not to protect the wearer but to protect others. If hundred percent people wear masks (sick and normal people), I am sure the infection rate will slow to a trickle. While I see most Thais are wearing masks, most farangs, except the Russians, are not.

The other day I went to the bank, Harry, the brick layer, was stopped by the security. He was very angry and started mumbling stupid, stupid. The security went inside and got a mask and he put it in his pocket and went inside any away. Papers with some Thai writings were taped in every other chairs. He sat on one of the chair that had a paper taped. The lady sitting next to the chair stood up and gave him her chair. He again stated mumbling why, Why I cannot sit here. I showed him the paper. He again started mumbling stupid no English. I started to think this is the same arrogancy of Tom (plumber), Dick (truck driver), and Harry (brick layer) that have brought the Western countries to their knees and caused  a world wide pandemic.

First off, hard to judge a race by isolated examples.... many people are taking this seriously everywhere and just because some idiots misbehave in Thailand it doesn't mean it applies to entire nations.

And the world pandemic was caused by wet markets in China, and the greed of the morons trying to monetize wildlife (oblivious to the dangers they exacerbate by mixing different species in tiny cages).

The pandemic was caused by superstitious and greedy chinese peasants dude....nothing else, hate on the west all you want, but the west is paying the price of third world stupidity, at the end of the day.
