Concern over risk of increased infections transmitted by Thais returning from high-risk areas

A senior doctor at the Disease Control Department (DCD) has expressed serious concern over the risk of a further spread of COVID-19, due to infections among Thais returning from high-risk countries, such as the United States, France and Spain.

Dr. Anupong Suchariyakul, a DCD expert, said today that, in a group of 59 new confirmed coronavirus cases, 21 were those arriving in Thailand from high-risk countries.

Parents of about 200 Thai high-school students, in the USA under the American Field Service exchange programme, have demanded that the Thai Government help arrange their return.

Two more new cases are linked to the boxing stadium and 10 others are associated with entertainment venues.

The country’s death toll from the contagion has increased by 2 to 9 since yesterday.  One was a 54-year old man, in the southern border province of Yala, who had recently returned from Malaysia. Another is a 56-year old woman who went to a private hospital in Bangkok for treatment and was found to be suffering with a serious lung infection.

The number of critical cases has increased to 23, from last week’s 17, while 16 more have recovered and returned home.  A total of 1,388 are still in hospital.

Among the 1,524 confirmed cases, 21 are medical personnel.

Dr. Anupong also warned against the use of public transport, saying that the commuters must wear face masks at all times or, preferably, stay at home.

here we go again - blame those pesky foreigners while the whole thing started in China and Thailand allowed them to enter unabated for weeks - and my current understanding is they still can - but don't allow Thais to enter - your own citizens - how ** up is that

It seems that you don't get it at all mate!

They are right to be very carefull with these travellers from highly infected countries.

Ill spread some REAL serious concern, out in the country away from Bangkok many are totally  ignoring   the "distance" advice, just today there is a party down the road, all the lights  are  up ,chairs  are  all  out........wonderful....... looks  like about 100+ chairs, down the road  6-7 Monks  all crammed in a pick up outside the temple, no doubt  Buddha will protect them

And then down the road a bit  farther the burning continues today, party and burning congrats, good  of the Police though to help with the covid 19  party

Amazing - surely anyone allowed to travel must also be kept in quarantine upon arrival... so what's the risk?

Something we don't know about?

It's a good job all the clever people are well gagged.

You're absolutely right about travellers from infected countries.

So why did the government allow 'Chinese travellers' into Thailand, ignoring the risks when it was known what was happening many weeks ago?

In case you haven't noticed, Thai are slow learners, very slow.....in fact they hate education in general....and even more they don't like rules/laws....

True but in the country villages, as of yet, there is no corona virus, they are isolated until people return from high risk areas like BKK etc. Where I am nobody wears a mask unless they go to the market town (where as of yet there have been no infections) so exaggerated precautions aren't necessary.

Have demanded?? They are rich families so they can send them back on private planes like the chinese did.

And self isolate at home when they return.... keep the infection in the family!

Well, either you'll have to shell out some substantial dosh to bring them back (like you did when you sent them in the first place) or the little darlings will just have to sit it our like everyone else.

absolute rubbish - they are blocking their own citizens

No country in the West would block their own citizens - they might ask them to do some stuff once they arrive but "block them" you are taking nonsense

Yes correct, they will be put into isolation in 5 star hotels free of charge and they

still complain about it. ( food is no good, no fresh air, blablabla)

The threat from those returning from overseas is real although the threat of transmission from locals to locals is now the real issue and the fixation on travellers must make way for action on the local community.

The Thai kids that work for me all have university degrees, are fluent in two languages, and are quite likely capable of learning faster than you. Oh, and they are following the lock down rules to the letter.
