I download and unzip to desktop. All I get is stub.dll 6.0.0.11 of 384kb. Is Real Player worth having given their Mickey Mouse installation procedure?

Real Player has spyware...use Real Alternative or Quicktime Alternative (both have crap built in to call home). Google it.

Not spyware in the nefarious, harmful sense. It collects usage data, statistics, and error messages.

As does Winamp, WMP, Windows, and just about everything. Take 10 seconds to uncheck the options that involve emailing you crap when you install and you'll be fine.

They don't do any damage so I don't worry about it. Funny how you say "Google it" when Google collects more info about people than any software you install on your computer.

Paranoia can be healthy but I prefer to save it for real threats.

Real Player

Quick time

and their alternatives and other players (VLC is a good player that plays just about anything)

Can all be found in one place for easy downloading at www.filehippo.com

VLC has another great feature, it disables DVD region checks automatically without the need for other software.

I advise against installing realplayer. It's bloatware, and hijacks a lot of system functions. Also a lot of adware in it.

If you want to play RM files, you can with "real alternative". It comes with the KL mega codec pack (search for it). Also has Quicktime alternative so you don't have to install quicktime (also bloatware).

What system functions does it hijack? You can associate it with whatever audio files you want, or not associate them, just like any other audio program. It's far more stable than realalternative too which locked up on me all the time.

If you do need to download and install Real Player, I recommend that you download and install SpyBot Search & Destroy, along with it's Tea Timer utility beforehand.

That way when you are installing Real Player, SpyBot will detect when Real Player attempts to add TkBell.exe to your Registry. You can tick 'Remember this decision' and then 'No'. There'll probably be two instances, so just repeat.

That way it won't bother you again. You can go into SpyBot's Tools, enter the Start Up items and then delete TkBell.exe from there if you'd like to do so.

No more annoying Spyware.

No need to fill in their silly forms either.

Another alternative is Songbird. Made by the mozilla guys. Mozilla.com.

Yes, for the most part, all players have some sort of tracking, etc. But RA and Quick are real bad with that stuff. That is why there is the Real Alternative. Must be a reason.

CyberLink PowerDVD Player v.7.2 has noticeably sharper quality than Windows media center WMC, or free stuff like VLC. Available at Pantip Plaza.

Why the Windows team couldn't put a click-and-slide scroll feature into their media center is completely beyond me. At least PowerDVD has one, although it's not the easiest to use.

Also, PowerDVD does not run the 4 or 5 video sections of a whole movie seamlessly together, as does WMC. One has to go into the file menu and click on each video sub-file as a section ends. Convenient for drink-making or toilet breaks, perhaps?
