Immigration say they are doing all they can as petition gets signatures

An Immigration spokesman has hit back after pictures appeared of an overcrowded Government Complex in Chaeng Wattana, Bangkok, on a 'vote for change' site.

Pol Col Phakpong Sai-Ubon said that pictures on "change.org" were from last week, March 25th.

This was before immigration started implementing new measures to ease the burden of tourists and others contacting immigration to lessen the chance of covid-19 spread.

The petition calls for the Thai government to provide extensions of stay for all foreigners for 2 months.

Pol Col Phakpong said immigration has followed six points laid out by his chief Pol Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang.

Medical staff are at the complex doing screening and everyone gets stickers, he said. Social distancing measures of 2 meters are being practised in queues and seating arrangements.

Masks are being handed out. The areas used in Building B, second floor are thoroughly cleaned every day.

In addition further facilities to alleviate overcrowding have been opened in Muang Thong Thani and proposals were made to the ministerial committee about visa extensions being automatically provided, reported Naew Na.

Some people online felt these proposals did not go far enough in making it unnecessary to go to immigration and potentially catch or spread the virus, notes Thaivisa.

You only need your passport and complete TM47 for your Happy Meal with a side order of Pangolin.

Don't know where you are from, but 90 day only requires ONE (1) document - tm47 plus passport.  Since they opened the new facility at the airport, it has never taken me more than 5 minutes from the time I walk in till the time I walk out.

You have clearly never used this facility which is happening at more and more offices. Very efficient and very little delay. No documentation other than current 90 day report and passport.

The fries comment was lame 12 months ago when these improvements were initiated. i suggest you use your time at home to come up with more original material.

I agree in our office they only need their passport, and I admit that it is a vast improvement on the old method.

but it is the mob that is either sitting/standing around for twenty mins its like a scrum, most times you cannot get a seat. and that is fine until you throw V- 19 in and it then needs something done.

I wonder what all these people are doing lingering in Thailand. Does everyone want to stay forever if they could? Are they running illegal businesses. Is a month not enough for a shopping trip or tourist vacation? I get similar thoughts when driving on the congested roads. Where are all these people going? Are they just going out to buy something? Are they all working? Are they leaving the city? Why so many?

Wonder if they thought about the double meaning...

Still rammed in Jomtien IO.....no social distancing as if they did, the queues would probably extend all the way to the beach.

Unbelievable putting people at risk like this ????

This did not happen. Tourists get an extension, Non-Immigrants no free pass. More evidence, IMO, that Thailand has clearly decided they only want short term tourists. More draconian measures for those that are attempting to live here. Ever looked into Thai citizenship?

Hope they keep it like that

Anyone care to post a link to the petition?

Honestly think we westerners should be a little less compliant.

It is lunacy to attend a crowded immigration office in current circumstances.

If the 90 day reporting doesnt work on line then you simply cant do it.

Is attending immigration for 90 day reporting a matter of life and death or of importance to national security of Thaiiand? No!

Social distancing is important and not adhering to this policy could put lives of both Thais and westerners at risk.

Common sense should rule over bureaucratic obsessive disorder syndrome.

Throw in getting rid of the TM30 while they're at it.

This is one example of how to do it:

https://vietnaminsider.vn/no-penalty-for-overstay-vietnam-visa-during-national-social-distancing/

Easy peasy.

And showing concern for their own employees as well as for the foreigners.

Brilliant this is exactly the policy Thailand should adopt!! no worries and no risk to westerners or immigration staff.

Thais love to copy ......well Mr Pinnochio Pm follow a sensible lead and duplicate this example.
