Surachai Iamwachirasakul, director of Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) said on Monday (April 13) that a female bus driver succumbed to Covid-19 on Sunday while being treated at the Somdet Phra Pin Klao Hospital.

“The driver worked during the March 24 to April 3 period, and only took two days of leave,” he said. “On April 3, she had high temperature and had herself admitted in hospital, where she later tested positive for Covid-19.”

Initial investigation revealed that the driver had been in contact with 18 BMTA staff members. Of the 18, nine were considered to be at high risk of infection and were ordered to quarantine themselves, while nine others were believe to be at no risk at all.

“The bus was pulled off the service since April 3 and was thoroughly disinfected,” Surachai said. “The BMTA will ensure that deceased employee’s family is compensated as per the terms and conditions of the Covid-19 insurance we have taken out for all employees.”

The Covid-19 victim drove bus no 140, which ran between Samae Dum in Bang Khun Thian district to Victory Monument in Ratchathewi district.

“Passengers who used the bus with serial number 5-90019 on April 1 between 7 to 10am and have displayed Covid-19 symptoms should contact the Department of Disease Control immediately,” he added.

They often miss important info like any pre existing health conditions?

Many of those passengers may have pre-existing health conditions.

If she was following those old red buses belching smoke....how can they be sure it was Covid-19 that killed her ?

There is a theory that younger people can die from this if they are exposed to a high viral dosage ... so people like medics, taxi and bus drivers, etc are in that category. A high dose of the virus to begin with allows it to spread extensively before your immune system kicks in, and your immune system is effectively overwhelmed. Might explain some deaths of young people without underlying conditions.

That is the phrase that get,s everyone, designed to instill fear ! "Where she later tested positive for Cov-19" ! It would be interesting to see a graph, worldwide or per country, showing the number of deaths from lung congestion type diseases, ie bronchitis, flu, pneumonia, etc. over the last few years, before this supposed virus hit town. I strongly suspect that there would not be a significant change. During the winter months loads of people come down with them, sadly not everyone recovers, but this is and always has been normal life. I have read in various publications that the inhabitants of large and polluted cities suffer from respiratory ailments to an astonishing degree, as in the region of 75% ! Perhaps this is the price we must pay for polluting our environment to the degree that we have ????

Like living in Bangkok and breathing copious amounts of 2.5 everyday might be considered a pre-existing health condition.

Yep, it is a theory.. just like warmer temperatures might be responsible for less infections.

And how many passengers were in that bus while he was driving, potentially getting infected?

One of the reason I prefer private transport to public is exactly this.

Yes, it's a thing for medical workers. High viral loads accelerate the initial course of the disease. It's why they need the masks, to prevent inhaling large doses of aerosolized SARS-CoV-2.

OK, trying to imagine what this bus driver looked like.

There's one in the first scenes of the movie "Contagion". Should give some inspiration.
