Trump approval rises, but more Americans support Biden for president

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The number of Americans who approve of President Donald Trump rose by 5 percentage points over the past week, but registered voters still favored Democrat Joe Biden for president by a small margin, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Tuesday.

The poll, conducted Monday and Tuesday, also showed that the public is paying closer attention to the candidates' views on the coronavirus outbreak than to what they are saying about the economy, healthcare or immigration. And more people think Biden is better suited to guide the country through the crisis.

Overall, 45% of adults in the United States said they approved of Trump's job performance, while 48% said they approved of the way he has responded to COVID-19, up 5 and 6 points, respectively, from a similar poll that ran last week. Trump's approval numbers have been up and down over the past few weeks, however, and it is not yet clear if the public is truly rallying around the president.

Meanwhile, 45% of registered voters said they would back Biden in the Nov. 3 election, while 40% said they would vote for Trump. Biden has maintained a small advantage in support among registered voters over the last four weeks.

The poll was conducted with most Americans forced indoors to protect themselves from the coronavirus that has infected more than 600,000 people in the United States and killed more than 25,000.

After initially downplaying the threat of the virus, Trump has conducted a series of combative news briefings during which he has harangued reporters for criticizing him. Biden, meanwhile, has struggled to remain in the conversation as the media focused on briefings by governors in some of the hardest-hit states.

When asked what was most important to them when deciding how to vote in November's presidential election, 32% of Americans said it was the candidate's plan to help the nation recover from the coronavirus. A smaller number said the candidate's views on the economy (21%), healthcare (13%) or immigration (5%) were most important.

Fifty-two percent of Americans said they felt that Biden was better suited to deal with the coronavirus, while 48% said they thought Trump would be better. Fifty-seven percent also thought Biden would be a better steward of the country's healthcare system, while 43% said Trump would be better.

Trump, however, had the edge when the public was asked who would be better for the U.S. economy (53% to 47%).

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, throughout the United States. It gathered responses from 1,111 American adults, including 937 who identified as registered voters. The poll has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Nixon, Reagan, Bush. ???? Anything's possible!

This is more like rallying around the flag syndrome, Bush got 90% approval in the days of the Gulf war, this is typical rise in support in times of wars and hardship, all that remain to be seen what will remain of this approval ratings come November...

Lifetime left-wingers like Joe Rogan:
"“[Trump’s] already dismissing [Biden],” Rogan said. “He’s gonna destroy him. He’s gonna kill him man. I mean it’s such an easy target, it’s like Mike Tyson versus a three-year-old."

Biden is in cognitive decline.  The Democrats could have thrown all their support behind one of the younger candidate. They didn't.  Instead they have Biden who looks  like the stiff at Weekend at Bernie's.  We're back to 'polls' like in 2016.  But the polls are biased.  They simply signal to the voters how those with the money to control the media (and the polls) wish them to vote.  The polls will be wrong once more.

Fyi, I've no dog in this fight.  I don't like either candidate.  Just calling it how I see it.

To be fair to the democrats you can see how this happened. They were so very sure they could get Trump booted out by their little judicial coup that they honestly never expected to have to fight an election. Since the day Trump destroyed Hillary at the last election they knew he would be kicked out of office. There was the Stormy Daniels hoax, Russia-gate with the peepee dossier, Ukraine hoax with dozens of commemorative engraved gold pens(yipppeee what fun!!), tax returns kerfuffle. There was no way on earth Trump could survive the storm enough to be able to compete in the 2020 election. And yet...

Now as far as I can see, the only thing Biden has done since this Chinese virus hit has been to run and hide. He is so out of his depth. Trump is fighting hard, and I appreciate his efforts, in spite of almost half the country rooting for the CCP and the virus in a last ditch attempt to see Trump suffer. So pathetic.

I'd be surprised if Trump didn't win as the alternative doesn't know what day it is. Trump should easily be beatable but what is the Dems strategy?  put up an ailing, white candidate who's drug sniffing son, kicked out of the Navy, worked for the Ukrainians?  Trump will eat him alive.

sometimes I wonder  who is good for america

A president who fights everyday . who fights against china .  who dont like  people who come to america illegally ,   who loves taxing other nation , who never learns  how to talk

or

A president who talk  nice ,  to who media loves ,  who support illegal immigrants . who will keep supporting iran , who will  sell america to china  and who will raise tax

Clearly us guys that live in Lamphun are the only ones that seem to get it .   Doesn't matter what face they put on the ballot .  or which side ,  its all the same .  One big conglomerate intent on furthering THEMSELVES.   I mean,  i understood this by the time i was 17 .  And the noose around the rest of us just keeps getting tighter and tighter.

Meanwhile,  even the "smart" guys on here still argue about Trump or this or that.  jeeeez

Funny observation about Biden.     And also :  i have no dog in the fight.   You can always vote for Rumak .  "Free pizza for everyone ! "

Even if DT loses the election he'll still be in the WH on January 21st.

Get used to it.

A factor in public perception is time on mainstream TV.

Trump’s daily news briefings (AKA Campaigning on the Taxpayers Dime) are working wonders as he himself directly informs the nation of his ineptitude, inability to tell the truth, take leadership (let alone responsibility) and blames everyone for his own failings - And that’s When he’s not declaring he holds absolute power.

His most recent performance was a gem of a dumpster fire. I hope he keeps these daily news conferences going, they are Democrat gold.

If you are referring to him using the fake news media's own words against them by playing their clips in his press breifing, it was a masterstroke. As well as being comedy gold it shows the world that MSM is acting against Americans best interests. We heard from the MS clips that the flu is worse than Covid, shutting the borders was racist, there was no chance that covid could be a problem etc etc. Priceless!! No surprise that CNN and others cut away from the humiliation and refused to show their being made to look the clowns they are.

It was actually an infringement of the HATCH Act and evidence of Trump electioneering on the Taxpayer Dime, itself an infringement of the HATCH Act.

A minority of Americans might not find that troublesome.

Is the reality trump is getting desperate and overacting. An example below which anyone with one remaining brain cell will see as outrageous propaganda which hopefully will backfire.

trump administration has instructed IRS to print his name on the cheques for the $1,200 stimulus payments to 70 million Americans. The first time a president's name has appeared on an IRS disbursement.

These polls fail to state what the question was.

A poll can ask "who will you be voting for" or a poll can ask "who do you think will win. 2 different answers that can be turned into some sort of approve/dissappove statistics.

Many of the polls back in 2016 asked "who do you think will win", Lots of trump voters answered Hilary.

DT should buy an hour's worth of television air-time and do one of his rally presentations with canned audience response, like a sitcom.  The exploding dishwasher routine is good, and then there's the number of times he flushes the toilet -- the number in that one goes up every time he tells it, let's see where it is now.  Mocking of physically handicapped people is always a crowd pleaser.

The recording will be referred to in posterity.

There are so many of these things where "he can't do that, it's against the law!" simply doesn't apply any more, and I don't mean only DT.  Probably the first shoe to drop was that business 2 weeks before the 2016 election where Comey announced yet another investigation of Hillary, so many people claimed it violated a rule but nothing happened.

Emoluments, remember that one?

The more you look for the more you'll find.

Progress reports versus fake news......Should be done regularly/as needed to refute/update over the fake/unreported "news".....

Donald J Trump doesn't need to buy airtime. The media can't turn away. On the other hand Joe Biden couldn't fill a Denny's restaurant, and that was before the Virus hit.

Yeah man Trump is desperate. Spread the word big bad Joe has it covered. Provided he has a couple of people to whisper in his ear and remind him he is still running for President. The excitement man! It's killing me!
