'Absolute legend' British veteran raises $25 million by walking for the health service

Featured Replies

It's a shame that someone has to do this.

But it happens if you follow BoJo in supporting NHS by millions or trillions...!

The British Health system is rotten and can't compete with other Continental systems as in Merkel's country.

The NHS has deliberately been Wound down by Stealth since 1980, In 1947 when first set up it had 400,000 beds , Today 127.000.  The British government has halved the NHS budget since 1980, Thats why as you say the British NHS Cannot compete, which i disagree with. If the NHS is so bad why do European health tourists come to Britain,

Don't forgot, way back when, a simple operation meant a week in hospital, now, in and out the same day.....I have the T-shirt.....????

£20 million won't even pay for the upgrade of the CEO's office at 4 hospitals, which is probably where it will end up.  Of course the suckers that paid out will never know what happened to it.

The money does not go to the NHS - it goes towards a variety of charities that support NHS workers and patients .

I think that Captain Tom has done a great job in rallying the country behind the NHS.  He has said himself that he never expected for a moment that this would escalate like it has.  Tom's money raising exercise has become the Band Aid of the 21st century (so far).  He has become the poster boy as Bob Geldof was back in the day and like then, the real heroes are those sending in the money.  Which has come from over 50 countries!

I really am not trying to take anything away from Tom, he is a true hero.  There are several campaigns trying to get him a knighthood over this but I do think that would be unfair on all the people who are constantly out there raising money.  Definitely worthy of a gong but not a knighthood.

But........I think Captain Tom has done waaaay more than raise money, he has done more to "touch" the populace than anything else I have seen during this trying time, and I reckon a lot of folk have sat back to think about stuff and get on with it.

Tom is 99 years old, at his time of life a gong of some sort would be a nice gesture, and am sure everyone would back it..................

25 million?  I thought the economy was flatlining and everyone was waiting for their stimulus checks and unemployment payments.

Where did all this money come from? the 1% ers?  Hahahaha

Really? How and in what way will this happen and more importantly, because of the billions of taxpayers money that goes into all areas of the organisation, why?

This is not going be to be a popular view point.  Good on the Captain, well played and he deseves the praise, maybe even a medal, but £20 million, really??  People get caught up in the moment and swept along on a sea of emotional sentimentality that is a wee bit nausiating to witness, when it goes on too long and when normally, they couldn't give a toss.  Remember the stupid hysteria over Princess Di when she died?  This has now gone too far. for too long.   I see another worthy old biddy is climbing stairs and another 90 year old walking around his garden. Give to charity by all means, great idea, but don't wait for some emotional blackmail to tug at your heart strings. I will duck the stones that will no doubt come my way.

I always find it interesting how people like yourself have to label something as ‘stupid’ or ‘mass hysteria’ or whatever.....mainly because you don’t understand what is going on with many other people. You are outside of something big and you are not part of it, so it must be stupid. There wasn’t a mass hysteria, mainly because those people didn’t know each other, and in many instances where in other countries. If you want to use mass hysteria think of Hitler and the Nazis focused on hatred and negativity, but all in one country. Diana was about being devastated by her untimely loss after being a beacon of hope for millions. The Love for her was the opposite of the hatred in Germany.

Also someone’s comment about loving somebody you don’t know. If you haven’t figured it out at this late stage of your life, Love is what life is all about. It all comes down to the common denominator that is Love. Princess Diana was respected and loved by millions, and her premature death was an outpouring of those things. If you don’t understand it, don’t slag it off. Everybody is at different stages of their development as a human. I don’t slag you because of your lack of empathy.....one day you will be there.

That's my point.  Everyone coming out on Thursday nights banging saucepans and clapping.  People are desperate to show their support for the NHS but more than that it is the people coming together against a common threat.  All we are missing is a chorus of "No I am Spartacus!"  And this is what Britain needed.  After the vitriol of Brexit that split the country down the middle, this feels like once again Britain is pulling together!

But let's not forget the money is coming from abroad as well with over fifty countries involved in Tom's campaign.

Don't worry, there will not many tourists coming in future.

But those who made the mistake and went to UK for medical treatment got a good health insurance or entered the wrong plane by accident. ????

Dont forget, way back then, there where less people,

Good for him, and more power to him.

But it's ironic that a large number of those donating to his cause, and clapping for carers, also voted Tory at the last election.  The irony.

If you can’t raise your glass and thank a 99 year old war veteran for doing a good deed, you really need to have a good look at yourself in the mirror. Congrats on the great walk, Captain Tom.

Good onya' mate ????

Oh dear. Ask that question to any Thai person you meet, about their love for the 'Father of the Nation'.

Apologies rant over. Lets get back on track to walking and raising funds with Captain Tom.

Constructive criticism on a board of this nature is no indication to the contrary.
