African horse sickness has killed almost 300 horses, forcing the Department of Livestock Development to collect blood samples from horses in the hope of finding a vaccine.

Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Livestock Officer Potsawee Somjai collected blood samples of 405 horses from 23 farms in the province yesterday (April 19).

He said five to six horses are dying each day, with the number of deaths being 290 as of now. The best measure to stop the spread of horse sickness Serotype 1 is to find a vaccine.

However, a search for a cure has been delayed as the Covid-19 situation is the more serious threat, resulting in more and more horses dying.

The process to develop a vaccine began today (April 20) and the test result will be revealed in a few days. If it is a success, provincial offices can request the vaccine from the department.

The department has advised horse farmers to wait until they create immunity after the animals are given the vaccine. The farmers have also been instructed to cover their stables with mosquito nets to prevent insects from spreading the disease.

All sick horses must be separated from other horses and farmers need to wear gloves when they make contact with the animals.
