S’ville airport will soon offer long-haul flights

Sihanouk International Airport will soon increase its capacity to allow for long-haul flights – flights longer than seven hours – and the upgrade is expected to enhance relations in the trade, investment and tourism sectors between Cambodia and the rest of the world.

 

At a press conference on the “Progress and Implementation plan of the Secretariat of Civil Aviation” last week, State Secretariat of Civil Aviation spokesman Chea Aun said the construction of an additional 3,300m of runway is set to be completed by June, at which point long-haul aircrafts could fly directly to Cambodia.

That might well sound a further death knell to TAT figures of arrivals here.  As many Foreign visitors transit through BKK into Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and alike. Great too for their economy and travelers, once the World gets back to a relevant normality.

"The new Siem Reap Angkor International Airport — to be the largest one in Cambodia – will be located 51 km southeast to downtown Siem Reap and 40 km from Angkor Archaeological Park. It will cover an area of around 700 hectares and cost $880 million to construct.

Once the first-phase of the new airport is completed, the new airport will receive 7 million passengers annually, greatly facilitating aviation and the tourism development of Siem Reap and boost the economy Cambodia for whom tourism is second pillar industry"

Sorry don't wish to sound a Killjoy - but what a shame.  I visited Angkor Wat in the mid 1990s, so too their counterparts in Java. The  pyramids in Egypt ten years earlier. Machu Pichu in the early 2000s.  With cheap and abundant airfares mass tourism will turn what is a fantastic awesome celestial place into a Walt Disney amusement park. Before it was an arduous journey that ended in great rewards. Now any one can do it!?!?

Well, good for them.

10 years ago Sihaunokville was good.

Went last year.  Now, it has over 100 casinos and is a filthy hole shell of what it was.

Overpriced, garbage everywhere, just a dump full of Chinese gamblers.

Would not return if it was free.

Are you aware that most of their gambling activities have been banned and most of them have left?

They banned online gambling late last year.

If some of the casinos left, that is good.

Thanks for the update still would not go back there.

I take it you've never been to Cambodia. I lived there for 5 years. That country is going backwards not forward.

Where do the easier visas come from large numbers of tourists coming to Thailand are visa exempt can’t get much easier than that.

Yes indeed, and not looking good for all the tuk-tuk drivers that meet you at the current airport (when operational). I hope we're not going to have to use "city bound" buses owned and operated by the Chinese!!

Try extending it , u enjoy getting airport interrogations, try rent some unit , then bring 12 requirements some visa.. anyway yup a short 2 week visit staying at the hotels here is still doable !

I know what you are saying but Sianoukville was ruined years ago anyway..beaches gone and casino after casino..playground for the Chinese that's all

Sianoukville is a strange place. I've spent a lot of time there over the past 20 years. They always have their plan to make their future success. A few I remember:

 

Once we finish the golf course, people will come and we will all be rich. Well, they finished the golf course and nobody came...

 

Once we get the airport finished, people from all over Cambodia will come and we will all be rich. Well, they finished the airport and nobody came...

 

Now, it's we're going to get an international airport and we will all be rich. Guess what's going to happen.

 

Sianoukville is a sleepy beach town at best, good for a few day excursion from Phnom Penh to break up the monotony, but nothing more than that. The backpackers may like it due to the availability of marijuana, but they're not spending a lot.
