Soldiers compensate parents of drug suspect who died after interrogation

An Army unit under investigation after 11 of its soldiers allegedly tortured and killed a man in Nakhon Phanom province has sent representatives to compensate the victim’s parents at his funeral.

Soldiers from the Surasak Montri Task Force in That Phanom district on Monday (April 20) arrived to pay respects to the family of Yutthana Saisa, 33.

Yutthana was found dead with head injuries on April 17 after soldiers interrogated him for suspected drug dealing. They also questioned his younger brother, Nattapong, 29, who survived the beating but was later hospitalised and may have to stay in bed for another month, said doctors.

Soldiers on Monday handed Bt10,000 in compensation to Niwat Saisa, 59, father of the victim, saying the Task Force would also take care of the funeral costs.

Niwat said the force’s commander ordered seven men suspected of involvement in the alleged killing to ask for forgiveness from the family ahead of the cremation on April 23.

Seven soldiers, a commissioned officer and six non-commissioned officers have reportedly confessed to playing a role in Yutthana’s death and now face a military investigation. No suspects have been detained by police.

The incident occurred on April 17 when Yutthana and Nathapong were taken from their home to an operations base at a temple in Fang Daeng district and interrogated by a group of soldiers claiming to be from the anti-narcotics force.

The parents arrived at the base and found their sons had been severely injured, Yutthana fatally. They reported the incident to the police, alleging both had been tortured.

Government should be prosecuting them for murder and all the generals throw 100,000 each on as compensation.

Why have not been charged by police?

Surely they had no legal right to even pick them up in the first place?

Unfortunately they just follow the example of their superiors, ironic they were tortured and one beaten to death at a temple in a supposedly Buddhist country but not at all surprising, despicable bunch of bastards but no doubt they will get away with it just as their superiors do...

Sad, very sad, but that is the truth.

Hold the officer responsible. This would not have happened without his consent.

The only thing that stops soldiers being a vicious mob is discipline. When that breaks down then there is only one person to blame.

.. But we are in Thailand, reading Thai news, right ?

The fact that it happens in other countries, doesn't make it better.

Sad, sad world, when those who should enforce the law, behave like criminals.

Yes indeed, humans are humans - where ever they are, it is the same in different 'flavours'.

After many years here, I am still dumbfounded by this kind of abject Press Operation/Photo Op trumpeting their excuse with a few bank notes.

Military trumps Police

sorry we killed your son, heres 10000 bt. Now pose for a ridiculous photo with us. At the very least, apirat should be prostrating himself  in front of the parents.

Meaningless is more appropriate  than cheap. This will be fully demonstrated when those involved will get slapped on the wrist with a feather-duster.

The military seem to be able to conduct themselves with impunity and so do what ever they want. Nothing is going to stop them, no-one will take them to task.

Buck their system and one could just disappear...no questions answered.

And condoned by the elite here in Thailand and of course, Europe

Agh, the 'sacred' Thai military back in the news once again. Led by their highly esteemed leader Apirat (a Google search on him and his family background makes interesting reading).

What a truly sickening establishment they are in every way. They are so deeply ingrained in the society here that they can act without any repercussions and have full backing from the very top.

Is nowhere sacred in Thailand? doing it in the temple and where were the monks?

Exactly as you say, this is a way of dissuading the family for the egregious actions performed by the unit.  More than that it shows just how cheap life really is here. The least they could have done was to cover all the costs for a funeral as well as the food needed by this family in their time of need as they never would have expected to be having a funeral for someone so young.  Even if they were guilty of some offense, taking them away in the night from there home without a warrant is suspect in itself....

Really, and you base that on what cyril. Only guilty people are ever forcefully removed from their homes?, No confessions for a crime, that was never committed, are ever beaten out of a person?  I think you must be one who believes That GUILTY until proven innocent is the real deal.

And you know for a fact that he was a drug dealer, do you have some insight into these people and there lives, or once again just being a cynic because you also believe that innocent folks are never stopped and arrested, much less beaten...hope you never find yourself in a similar position because you were just unlucky to have some one believe you were a bad person and then a situation as such befell you.  I actually feel sorry for you
