Thailand in lockdown: Road deaths a fraction of normal

Daily News reported that just SIX people died in road accidents on Saturday.

Although the figures for death at the scene of accidents are not yet official it can be seen that the numbers for April - when much of the country has been in lockdown and curfew - are way down on normal.

Almost every day in April the number of fatalities on the Thai roads have been less than the normal average.

So far from 1 - 25th April 575 have died bringing the year toll to date 4,578.

Daily News publish the figures every day along with a cautionary tale based on one of the accidents.

On Sunday they highlighted an 18 wheel truck trailer that was transporting a container load of barley from near Bangkok airport.

One person died after the truck fell off an elevated road onto the Route 7 motorway between Sri Nakharin and Bang Pakong.

In normal years the death toll on the Thai roads - some of the most dangerous in the world - is thought to be well over 20,000 and possibly as much as 24,000 to 26,000 people.

  • A huge surprise and yet far more deaths on the road than from the virus over the same period.

Normally, I would rather take a sharp stick in the eye than to drive in Bangkok. However, with so many commuters working from home, making a supply run to Makro has been a pleasure!

Lets face it ,its not really the govts fault that if many Thai drivers had another brain cell they would be a plant.

Let's hope they don't look at the figures, decide they have done such a good job and impose curfews, lockdowns and alcohol prohibition for ever!

Who would have thought that the onset of a deadly pandemic would cause an upwards trend in population numbers?

No alcohol, curfew from 10 pm to 4 am. My niece could work out that cause-effect scenario, and she's as thick as a brick.

Yet we can be relatively sure, that some government- stooge will take all the praise forreducing road deaths , at the end of the year!

It is called a lack of enforcement.  I have never observed a patrol vehicle cruising up and down the highways stopping folks who are speeding, not wearing seat belts, having people in the rear of the truck, no tarps on loads that blow out, or many other violations.  The only thing I ever see, are checkpoints or impromptu radar speed stop locations......If they were proactive then maybe driving would be less hazardous here.

Thailand has seen a steady population increase over recent weeks.

Will this continue once the lockdown ends? Absolutely no chance. It'll be back to 50 or 60 a day.

You might have added police driving on scooters and motorbikes without helmets.

There's a checkpoint south of Chiang Rai which is never manned in the afternoon, at least in the 7 years i have been going through it. The drug mules must love it.

yep still lots

I wonder if they have statistics of the minor accidents.

I have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of motorcycles (food and other deliveries) and some of these guys drive really crazily.

A house on our soi has turned what used to be a quiet soi into a motorcycle race track by offering food take away.

As covid 19 subsides will they keep the country in lockdown because if they open it up there will be more road deaths? Are they only interested in showing off numbers to the international community? They use the excuse if they open up there will be a second wave so we have to remain locked down, wouldn't the same illogic apply? They just shot themselves with an article like this because most of know - although few will admit it publicly- what a crock this is.

Thanks for the list,my gf has got her lotto numbers now.

Well Generals you know how to deal with the slaughter on the roads over New Year and Song Kran. Lock down, curfew and no alcohol sales.....the road deaths will come hurtling down. Think about it.

Personally I love the curfew.....it has really screwed up the mini-road-racers on their exhaust-free Honda 125s racing along my road at midnight. They can keep it going forever as far as I am concerned.

Thailand. The hub of driving Amoebas. ????????????????????????????????????????????????

Aha! So its not the "slippery roads" that are to blame after all!

Thailand the only country in the world where covid 19 will have saved lives  ????

Brake failing micro sleepers have been furloughed but will be back on the race track very soon ????

But not for long. The rev-heads are just itchin to be allowed to get back on the road and kill themselves or each other!

That is hard to believe!   Thais the ones on the motobikes got balls while the ones in cars are a bunch of cowards using their larger vehicle to demand and force others off the road as if they own them for cars only.

The ones on the bike got balls they travel with no helmet, drive down Soi that should be 30 Km/h at best going 80-90 under and over taking without a blink yet a Virus was the answer all the time?

It is Amazing Thailand!????
