Pattaya beach-goers threatened with 100,000 baht fines and imprisonment

New signs have been erected in Pattaya warning of the stiff penalties people face for using the resort’s beaches.

 

On Thursday, officials announced that a total of nine beaches in Pattaya would be closed off to the public until the end of the month. 

 

On Friday morning, an operation overseen by the mayor of Pattaya Sonthaya Khunpluem, saw barriers and signs put up declaring the beach off limits.

 

Signs put up at the nine beaches, including at Pattaya, Jomtien, Wongamat and at Bali Hai, state that anyone who enters the beach faces up to 100,000 baht fine or up to one year in jail.

 

While people are allowed to exercise on the beach walkways and promenades, entering on to the beach itself if not allowed, nor is congregating around the beach.

 

Officials said they would be using drones to help patrol the area and ensure no one violates the order. 

 

The measures have been introduced to prevent a possible second wave of COVID-19 infections.

Why only in English ? 

I am curious if Thais have to pay this too. I guess not because they will say "I can´t understand the English sign".

Same time many Markets are allowed to open up, because there they practice social distancing.

And the sign is wrong. It should be may be, not will be imprisoned. Its not up to police or council to decide.

They have to write it down in French otherwise the 80-year old might be back.

I saw the Pattaya PD having a big press conference on the beach this morning in front of Topp down by the Teddy Museum showing off their drone to the media....

Last night around 7.30pm....many couples and groups on Jomtien beach drinking....it's either close the beaches or ban the booze...take her pick

Not "may be". You will get one or the other.

And nowhere does it say that the police decide which it will be. They will arrest you and when you go to court, the judge will decide.

FYI : These beaches were already dead empty just prior to the corona virus outbreak !

Any violator should be jailed for life for ever thinking about setting foot on Pattaya beach ever again????

That seems to me that punishment and threats is all this government is good at. 

 

690 people break the curfew, have friends around for a couple of drinks to relax. Up comes the heavy handed BiB, arrests and fines all around and the government threatens to ban the booze again for everybody.

 

Whatever happened to happiness and reconciliation for the Thai people promised 6 years ago by the PM?

The ''official'' reason is to discourage the bangkokians to come

in Pattaya for a day trip to the beach.

 

The ''unoficial'' reason is to avoid the transformation of the Pattaya beach in a

big homeless campement (That was already going this way just before the corona crisis)

and make visible for everybody (Including the international medias) all the misery present

in the area.

 

For the closure being related to safety reasons linked to the virus, you are right

it's totaly absurd. there is actually 0 cases in Pattaya plus the beach is a very big

area in open air where it's more than easy to do social distancing

That is all the authorities are good for anyway.

tonight a very big sign was just installed on the beach

face to the Central festival, with the translation in english, thai

chinese and french.

i don't know who did the translation (Google?) but the french

part is quite funny

That is the maximum, a person may get less. Thats why it should be may be liable. It doesnt have to say the police decide, simply putting the sign up to say what you get is stating thats what you get, so no need for court.

Has it maybe occurred to you that there may be signs in Thai to? But the photographer didn't take one or if he did TV didn't use it?

I saw on the news last night that the famous Bangkok market Chatuchak will reopen. I realize this is another province but allowing this, yet keeping beaches closed (and imposing draconian punishment if you do not obey) seems out of balance. The need for recreation space should be greater than that to shop for mementos and old tat. 

Sure beats 100b fines for no helmet.....I can see this beach ban staying in force for a year or so:))
