Newbie Female Travelling Solo To Thailand And A Fem Hygiene Question. Advice?

Featured Replies

Hello Ladies,

I'll be travelling to Thailand alone in June for the first time and I'm a little nervous about safety etc. I've travelled alone before but I've been around a lot of paranoid people lately whom assume that I'll get kidnapped, sold into prostitution etc...

I know this is extremely far-fetched and I'm interested in hearing about experiences from women whom have been there.

I'm a very petite 25 year-old who has been cursed to look "cute" like a pixie. I'm assuming that the men in the hostels I'm staying at will be the biggest problem.

Any thoughts on travelling alone as a woman?

Also, are pads available there? Are there normally trash bins near the toilets to dispose of them? I'll be on Ko Tao and another island for over a month and I'm assuming that western toilets won't be available.

And speaking of toilets...Is it hard to find public toilets?

Thanks for any and all help.

Christine

On islands like Koh Tao and I would guess whatever other island you are going to there'll be plenty of western toilets.

Hope that helps! :o

I'd have to agree with BKK - I think your expectations are a bit low on thailand's development. Yes - they do have running water and showers too. :D

And pads are more commonly available than tampons.

New young lady asks a question and three blokes answer... Typical, :o

Ms. "cute, petite" Cakiko, I must admit their answers sound about right...

Thailand's pretty cool. You'll enjoy your time. Koh Tao, and neighbouring islands are quite civilised, advanced and comfortable. Most people you will be likely to meet have been/are travellers too, and it's a case of many in the same boat. You'll be more at risk in your home town, as likely as not.

I wouldn't concern myself with paranoia of others. Just use normal common sense, and be smart.

Regards

Kayo.

Hi Christine

From my experience of traveling alone in Thailand, (and also female), you will never really be “alone”, you’ll always hook up with people doing the same thing as you. In fact, in a way it’s better as you will meet more people.

As for safety – yes I personally found Thailand to be safer than London (home). I am petite as well and a similar age and don't think it is an issue.

Chill out and look forward to it. Goodluck!

Uf! I did not mean to sound like I wasn't expecting much from Thailand. I'll be at a home stay while on Koh Tao and was told that there wouldn't be a western toilet. That was all I meant by that. :o

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Still though, there has been no answer in regards to the public toilets question...

I've never seen a public toilet in the sense that they have them in London, but there will be bars whose toilets you can use. That's the best answer i can give. They are not on street corners (they don't exist either :o ) but you will be able to pee somewhere. Enjoy.

As leisurely says, go into bars, or walk into hotels & use theirs. As long as you look like you know where you're going, no-one will stop you. BTW, there are bins next to every toilet, Western or Thai. That's because you don't flush toilet paper here (clogs up the toilets) you drop it into the bin, so I guarantee there will be one in every toilet. Not tissue, though, so carry a pack of tissues in your bag.

And as for you men, hitting on cute young girls asking about pads & toilets - are there no depths you won't sink to? :o:D :D

Christine,

Thailand is not as 3rd world or backwards as you may assume - you can find public toilets and definitely get pads or tampons here just as you would back home. :o

As for your safety concerns, it is no more dangerous here as it is any where else in the world - just don't do anything here that you wouldn't do at home. If you avoid situations that you would normally avoid at home (dark streets while intoxicated at 3am in the morning, especially in areas where known assaults/robberies are known to occur) there is no reason to worry about your safety here.

Enjoy your holiday!

No

:o

And as for you men, hitting on cute young girls asking about pads & toilets - are there no depths you won't sink to? :o:D :D

We are fearless. No depth too low. Pads and toilets are no challenge. :D

Anyway....

If Koh Tao is anything like Koh Phangan the public toilets will be few and far between. Since you are young you will be able to adjust to the squat toilet where you'll be staying. Its only a short time so don't be too concerned.

And Koh Tao, like Phangan, is filled with travellers your age. Meeting people won't be a difficulty, just don't be too trusting. Just because they come from the same country as yourself, doesn't make them trustworthy :o

As for feminine products, pretty widely available as Thai women use them as well. Pads are everywhere but tampons are not.

There's several Boots in Samui as well as Watson's, with all sorts of hygiene products.

Here or anywhere, not everybody is your friend just because they flash a beautiful smile or say you are cute, as sbk said, don't be too trusting.

Prior to moving here, I traveled alone for years here, holidays on Samui for months at a time, not once did I feel afraid.

Well, I did feel afraid of the crazy drivers when I was driving my motorcycle.

Use common sense same as back home
