New normal: Screens for taxis made by Thai Air Force aim to inspire passenger confidence

Channel 7 reported that a senior representative of the Royal Thai Air Force presented a prototype of a new plastic shield to protect taxi drivers and passengers from contracting the coronavirus in cabs.

Kitsom Phankosan met with several taxi companies and garages to present the device.

He said that it is made from clear plastic polycarbonate that is long lasting and scratch resistant.

It is fitted with six fans that circulate air between the passenger and driver compartments. The fans operate quietly.

In addition it is easy to install and take out and a big bonus is that it is fully made from products that can be sourced in Thailand and only costs 2,700 baht to make.

It would be an absolute boon for inspiring confidence in the travelling public and preventing the spread of Covid-19, it was reported.

Blueprints to produce the shields were handed over to the taxi firms.

Can't help but think 'why not just copy the well planned, formed and constructed thick, strong and totally clear plastic shield which protects taxi drivers in China. Planned & fitted to protect the driver only (originally from violence), doesn't prevent the front passenger seat being used, gives good driver protection but allows good communication.

I'm talking bout the screens already fitted in taxis in China some 20 years ago, you talk easily talk to the driver who can easily hand you the handset to talk to his/her office in English when there's a language issue, and passenger has full uninterrupted view of the meter. By the way 20 years ago the majority of taxis (at least in the bigger cities in China) already fitted to use credit cards.

u are onto something!

This one is however just stupid, the last thing u want to have is ciruclating air. You are  better of not having this thing installed and just open all of the car windows. way better off.

The virus is primarily circulated by air. The screens for some unfathomable reason have six fans to circulate air between the passenger and driver compartments.... Not sure in what direction... Either way, what am I missing here???

This indeed must be one of the most stupid design ideas ever presented... (Without the fans, though, perhaps maybe...)

And what is that in the middle, a taxi glory hole???

And why in the world is the AF getting involved with the totally unrelated, irrelevant issue of taxi screens???  Perhaps they don't actually have anything better to do?

Definitely point the fans at the passenger's face.

great - one way to make sure is gets around and everyone is exposed

the best way is to open all the windows and keep the area well ventilated

or better still, avoid using closed in taxi's would be my preference - or any sort of public transport with closed doors like BTS etc

Maybe the fan blades are designed to slice and dice the virus?

Seems to me that the passenger would be better protected from a COVID19 infected driver in a taxi without this thing installed.

So the virus gets on your gloves, then you touch somebody/thing else or your face, and then what?

Thing is you can't really see where you're going so an unscrupulous driver could take you for a ride without you realising it .. Upside I suppose is you won't see what your about to crash into in the event of an accident ..

I've also been for the past 10 years here.. ????

Will they protect against the rip-off virus endemic among taxi drivers?

In this instance, fan driven air farce comes to mind.

What's that hand doing, coming in from the driver's half?

For an offer of some 'relief' to break up the journey? Can't see any tissues in the back there.

"The Thing" is known to be a good driver ????

Nor exactly "clear polycarbonate" is it ?  A built in design so that you can't see that the driver is going the wrong way or the long way.  I am sure the designers will be boasting about how Thailand has the first virus protection system in taxis. Will the rest of the world follow ??????

If they made it soundproof i would love the idea.

Then you no longer had to have the same talk with the driver that you've already had 1000 times before.

"U like Thai lady"

Can't see the "fixed" meter either.

To be honest, if I hailed a cab and he had one of these I would be waiting for another cab.

My thoughts exactly. I will not get in a taxi outfitted with one of these.

Does 'inspire confidence' mean that it look good but isn't effective?

And I thought the whole idea was to stop virus spread through air, stupid me...????
