Only a handful of commuters queued to use train services at Bangkok Train Station, also known as Hua Lamphong, this morning (May 18), the first day the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) resumed train services on 42 routes nationwide after a relaxation in the lockdown.

To prevent Covid-19 from spreading, the SRT has employed a series of strict safety measures – social distancing, providing alcohol hand gel at ticket booths, allowing only 50 per cent of seats in carriages to be used, and banning the sale of food and drinks on board. Also, the SRT is not running air-conditioned trains at the moment as closed spaces might increase the risk of virus infection.

Before boarding, commuters must fill out a form detailing their personal information, health status and travel history, and undergo screening, which includes a thermal scan.

The SRT has urged all passengers to make their ticket reservations online or via telephone to reduce crowding at ticket booths.
