Thailand considers shortening curfew hours to midnight until 4am

000_1QD6I4.jpg

Thailand’s National Security Council (NSC) has been assigned, by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, in his capacity as the CCSA chief, to consider whether the current 11pm to 4am curfew can be shortened to midnight to 4am during the third phase of relaxation of lockdown restrictions, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngarm said today (Saturday).

He explained that the extension of the state of emergency is a different issue from the curfew, which is a measure imposed under the state of emergency adding, though, that there would be no need for a curfew if the state of emergency is lifted.

Dr. Wissanu also said that the closure of schools, and the postponement of the start of the new school year until July 1st, is a separate from the state of emergency, as the schools were ordered closed by the Cabinet in early March, for the safety of students during the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that distance learning, via smartphones or television, which is due to begin on June 1st is not new, but has been practiced at Ramkhamhaeng and Sukhothai Thammathirat universities for many years.

There is no need for a curfew at all anyway ! But it does show how they have control of the people, which is their main objective.

  • he tried to explain it and failed   because there is no sensible reason for this removal of civil liberty - none

Does this mean I can't catch coronavirus between 11 p.m. and midnight soon?

So if there is a 6 hour curfew, a 5 hour curfew, a 4 hour curfew it will stop the virus spreading, anybody who believes that needs locked in a loony bin.

I agree 100%

The hours of the curfew make absolutely no difference to anything. They've achieved their goal by imposing a curfew in the first place.

Two examples of school distance learning from our household. My lad goes to a school that does everything through Facebook which includes some teachers who never used FB before doing 'online classes.' So far nobody, both students or parents, has managed to make sense of it beyond an impressive list of class login and password info that after about 2 weeks, still leads mostly nowhere. I did see a 3-question homework sheet that took all of 5 minutes to answer before off out to play so I'm not convinced that he's on a fast-track to a gold star. A quick look at the last online homework session and a whopping 3 kids have participated.

His older cousin goes to a different, lower budget school. He goes there twice a week, the first time to collect his homework assignments which includes what he needs to do online. He takes it home, does a bit of online stuff before writing answers in the regular school jotters which he drops off back at school later in the week on the second trip. The graded jotters are given back the following week along with the new homework. He's good for maybe an hour on the computer and maybe 2 or 3 hours on the books. It looks like that school has embraced the lack of in-house computer classes and equipment.

A third school, a private one with higher fees and all sorts of student acceptance tests insists that their students home computer be running Windows XP so as to be 100% compatible with what they are creating online. Luckily I don't have anyone going to that fine, modern establishment.

The DPM comparing university online learning by more mature students with what the Education Ministry is fobbing off on provincial schools to develop for a much younger student demographic is a bit of a stretch. The new television teaching channels must be a bit of a money spinner for the creators but I can't see it actually serving it's real purpose of educating the kids.

The way I read it, the idea of the curfew was to prevent 'social' groups meeting in the evening, which often carry on into the small hours once they begin, allowing the virus chance to transmit.

Social groups like going to a friend's house to drink or gamble.

I gather the thinking was that by having a curfew the 'irresponsible' knew they'd be stuck in situ, so probably wouldn't start in the first place.

Having a curfew and hitting people financially as well as possible imprisonment was seen as enforcing social distancing for the irresponsible.

Control. Fear. Suppression.....might be argued as "Crime suppresion" ?  I see bluesofas point, but surely if that was so - then those people would just stay at the property partying or gambling til after 04.00am!!

Sooooo...what will we do with our 1 hour of new found freedom?

Pubs, bars, cinemas...still closed!

So now we know, we COULD stay out until 11!

Wow!

Thanks, oh man who brought happiness back to Thailand!

The curfew, at this stage is absolute nonsense. It is not needed, it is not wanted, and it is draconian, at best. A hapless army continuing to flex it's tiny muscles. This is not about the people. Not at this point.

Yeah, but you're using ferang logic.

I'm not sure how many Thais would be keen to 'crash' at someone's house on the floor, being a different culture.

Plus, I've read news reports of neighbours 'dobbing in' people partying, when social distancing is supposed to be strictly enforced.

I'm not defending the curfew, but knowing that Thais are not great rule-followers, I can see why it's being applied.

Great. Now my as -a- nine big fatheaded Thai neighbor on the other side of another housing estate fence will be going more wild. Already was disrespectful of the curfew and his neighbors. As much as I abhor the military iron fisted control, I abhor this Thai guys sense of self entitlement and his do what he wants.

If Wuhan virus numbers down—why the need for curfew?  Stop the 14 day quarantine, open hotels and beaches...

2-4 am sounds more like it!

Are you being paid for this like the 50 cent army in China or is this a tongue in cheek comment?

Thais don't have the same respect, maybe not the best word, let's say manners toward other people as many of us are use to. It is unfortunately about themselves first and foremost with little or no consideration for others. This is evident in all aspects of life here. I would think (but don't know) that all or most Asian nations are the same, Japan being an exception.

This emerency decree was perfectly summed up by his arms raised and fists pumped photo. It's been about control the whole time and just using covid-19 as an excuse. Keep the people in fear and he will protect them with draconian measures. It's working a treat so far, no more filthy farang tourists coming in, no sleazy bars open, people lining up and doing what they are told. Extend again next month.

Honestly ..pls for gods sake stop all that curfew sh**!!! It was shortened from 10 to 11 pm, but in practice NOTHING changed here in BKK . Malls and supermarkets close 8pm, Nightmarkets 9/9:30pm, you can’t dine out properly, as you don’t know when the restaurants close exactly etc. This curfew is killing everything. I don’t need to go to clubs or bars until 1-2am, but I would love to have the old opening times. Malls, restaurants until 10pm, if I’m hungry at 11pm go to 7/11 or grab some street food etc. Most places are still suffering a lot from the „new normal“ and social distancing...so no curfew a all would be the right step for people to feel a bit more comfortable again.

In truth the government as history shows over a couple of hundred years in Thailand doesn't want the populous educated to any great degree, educated people ask awkward questions and are not easily fobbed off with less than accurate answers.

Only the children of the elite get the real education because they are the ones who will perpetuate family monopolies, and rise to the top in each chosen field, which includes ministerial positions within government.

As for the masses they are given minimal education and indoctrinated through school life to do as they are told and not ask questions!

They are not encouraged to think for themselves but just do as instructed by the master race.

The ''slow showboat'' to no where....well I am sure his flunkeys are impressed  by this drama

curfew can be set as permanent to make an attractive tourist place without night noises. Is the only way to make the deal because police can't or don't want to pursue the noisy music from bars and noisy motorbikes in the roads. If some bad tourist, thai and foreign, wish to go elsewhere many other will come if the town is a relaxing place. There are less then 100 noisy motorbike in the town, we don't need 100 noisy tourists.

and just how did this curfew curb the virus......with the hours that were implemented ???
