Thailand’s water supplies may run short from November

The Royal Irrigation Department is advising farmers to rely more on rainfall rather than irrigation, because the water in reservoirs is limited.

 

Thongplew Kongjun, the department’s director-general, also warned that the country may run short on water supplies from November 1 to April 30 next year, because the demand for water is expected to hit 31,351.15 million cubic metres.

 

“As of May 1, reservoirs nationwide had 11,654 million cubic metres of water,” he said.

 

“According to the water allocation plan, 2,980 million cubic metres will be used for consumption, 3,654 million cubic metres for preserving the ecosystem, 4,974 million cubic metres for agriculture and 367 million cubic metres for industries.”

 

Meanwhile, Somkiat Prajamwong, secretary-general of the Office of the National Water Resources, said the quantity of water available nationwide was 35,484 million cubic metres.

 

“We expect rivers to rise as Thailand has entered the rainy season,” he said, adding however that some areas, especially those outside the irrigation areas, may run out of water for agriculture because the Thai Meteorological Department estimates 5 per cent less rain this year.

 

“Hence, the National Water Resource Committee has been tasked with the job of reserving as much rainwater as possible and ask people to also reserve as much water as they can.”

It would be really nice if this country knew anything about water management. They should never run short of water here, but alas, they do.

 

We installed a second water tank for the days when the city turns the water off. Working great so far.

did they ask the fortune teller ? we are at the start of rainy season but they can predict november will be a dry spell, in the .. euh... dry season ?

After a good week of rain, and everyone jumping for joy, in late April,  up north the rains petered out fast. Three weeks, four weeks, since we have had a serious rains. Blue sky and few clouds with reduced humidity today, looks like the hot season day out there today.  Yes some local downpours but ... uh huh. If we do not get serious rain, It will be back to drought before July rolls around.

5% less rain would mean Pattaya will run completely dry for weeks before songkran 2021. 

 

There might be an opportunity to relocate out of Thailand between September when first covid treatments may appear and then. Or start digging a really deep well.

I read not so long ago that Pattaya will run out of water in June if there wasn't a decent level of rainfall. There hasn't been much rain. Maybe the low number of tourists has helped out a lot and kept us going.

They don't seem too concerned. There was a fast leak outside our condo a month ago, and it took the water board weeks before they came to fix it.

Out here in rural Khampaeng Phet the villages water stopped sometime in January and the borehole took over until it dried up in February. Now the people have to go to the tessaban 6km away, fill in a form and wait for a delivery of 6 cu/m and then it is dry rinse and start all over again. We have been waiting 8 days now and have no idea when it will come. We normally pay 2 baht cu/m but a tanker load will cost about 300 baht.

There's a water truck filling our tank right now. Been doing that since late February, very little water coming from the pipes. Maprachan is basically dry, Nong Kho has had some inflow lately (tankers or something?), but not yet over dead limit. At least it rained last night.
