The long wait for handouts

Some 1,000 locals in Chonburi province were queuing up from as early as 1am on Thursday (May 28) at Soi Thappaya 5 in Banglamung district to receive handouts of food and consumer products provided by the Norwegian Seamen's Church Pattaya.

The church distributes 2,000 packs of the handouts at 9am every Thursday to people who have been affected by the Covid-19 situation in Pattaya, the famous tourist city that has been shut down to avoid the outbreak.

At around 3am, police officers from Muang Pattaya Station came to disperse the crowd as 11pm to 4am are curfew hours imposed by the government. However, a news source said that the crowd dispersed only temporarily and queued up again once the police had gone.

One of the villagers, whose house is located near the church, expressed concern that the gathering of the crowd could increase the risk of Covid-19 spreading as social distancing measures are not maintained in the queue, which is almost half a kilometre long. “Furthermore, their loud chattering is really annoying and kept us up until dawn,” they added.

It comes to something when farang organisations are feeding the natives, when their own government either cannot or will not.

Around the world the seeds of revolution/upheaval are probably being sown with what's happening now. (Apologies for stating the obvious again????).

You ever been desperate and hungry?

When there have been little to no cases in your province for almost 30 days, and you poor/starving and in need of supporting goods, they could careless about curfew and social distancing and would probably define your thinking and post as a joke.

Yes they appear to be bunch of ~@&&****s .....the choice of noun is yours!

Why doesnt the governor of Pattaya set up a few all day food kitchens where the hungry can come for a meal three times a day.

A highly profitable jetski scam ran for many years with ease and full cooperation from the the boys in brown and knowledge of foreign ambassadors.

So whats so difficult about feeding their own people at least they would get kudos for that simple operation.

just makes a complete farce of this idiotic curfew

and what about social distancing

I really feel sorry for these obviously desperate people, the Thai Government should be ashamed

yes the claimed hub of SEA letting their people starve - (deleted) shameful

Prayut should take a long hard look at those photos and ask himself some serious questions

It was a rhetorical question really Colin. They are selfish scum. They are stupid though as sooner or later there will be an election again, at which point the populace has the chance to pay them back for their arrogance and miserly actions.

And you really think they will get turfed out dd...no chance...I also find it interesting that the mainstream Thai media have not reported all the efforts of (mainly farang) businesses here the help given to these poor folk and lack of effort by those in power..but T.I.T. and rightly pointed by col it,s the 1% they look after...

Can't believe all those people are so desperate for holiday vouchers

I believe the idea is to reduce crime....

Another take on it is the amount of people who''ll lose their jobs in tourism. In my regular hotel in Bangkok I think about 85% of their staff have been laid-off, for now anyway. There are 2 long term residents living there, in what is a 50'ish room hotel.

At Virgin Atlantic, it wasn't Mr Branson that I was so concerned about, more the 8,500 other people that worked there.

Well a heck of a lot of wasted man power is spent guarding the beach to make sure no one walks on the sand.....I am not sure the numbers but I bet there are between 50 and 100 guards on just the Pattaya section of beach......

Now if these guards were handing out food instead, they could sure move a lot of food....

No hope there all the money gets squandered on toys for the boys vinyl boards and badges  ????

Good to see the Norwegian Seamen coming to the rescue.

Sad and wow 1am.

I see this every day and know ppl who do handouts, this Norwegian church is just 1 place, but theres many others like that.

Whats even make it worse its many foreginers organize this handouts daily for a long time now, instead thai gov doing it, then the very same foreginers are being screwed by not being allowed to open thier businesses, and they at big losses, for example bar owners.

So they at bigggggg minus, paying rent and other expenses and same time feeding poor.

A healthy diet of fresh vegetables and fish is said to stimulate oxygen supply to the brain. I think everyone else realizes what a farce this has become.

COULDN'T CARE LESS is the correct English expression.

Just so you do not learn your English from a Thai teacher.   PML

What a pleasant comment, mocking the poor and hungry!

Must be some pretty tasty food to get a crowd like that.

The saddest part is this is just the way the government wants it

I really cant see these folk qualifying for 50% reduction  on Hotels from the Government.

And if all the Hotels have staff working, then the Government does not need to subsidise them.
