No new case of COVID-19 in 65 provinces last month

BANGKOK(NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health has indicated that the COVID-19 situation in Thailand is improving, with 65 provinces reporting no new cases in a month. However, the situation is not stable enough, as the government continues to screen people returning from abroad and is proactive in testing suspected cases.

The Deputy Director-General of the Department of Disease Control, Dr. Thanarak Plipat, said yesterday that the number of COVID-19 cases in Thailand is relatively low. There are two main groups: Thai nationals returning from other countries and people who had close contact with previous cases. Those returning from abroad are placed in mandatory 14-day quarantine to see if they develop symptoms. However, academics have pointed out that there may be some people infected with the virus without showing any symptoms, in various parts of the country. They have not been tested and can potentially infect others. Therefore, the Ministry of Public Health has to stay proactive in maintaining a wide ranging testing program.

An analysis of the number of COVID-19 infections in different parts of Thailand, shows 10 provinces have zero cases. However, forty-two provinces have a morbidity rate of 0.1 to 1 percent, 18 provinces have a rate of 1.1 to 5 percent, two provinces have 5.1 to 10 percent and five provinces have more than 10 percent. In the past month, 65 provinces reported no new cases. Although the figures are low, it is possible that some people with COVID-19 do not display symptoms, particularly in greater Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Chonburi and four southern border provinces.

And, people say what is expected when they do those foolish surveys where they ask people to self-report about hygiene and fear of Covid 19. I know this is not scientific or, perhaps, broadly representative...but, today asked the wife if any of our neighbors, her friends she's in contact with, or her extended family are worried about Covid 19 infections. Her answer: "No. They think there is no Covid 19 in Thailand." Me: "Are some of them worried a little?" Her: "No."

I think the narrative of no infections here save a few in people who just came from elsewhere is getting through to people. But, how to keep up with that message and not quickly relax the lockdown measures?

People asymptomatic can be in any province they should realise this.

A young person having worked in Phuket and if with covid but without symptoms returning to family in Nakhon Nowhere can pass this on to an older person who may become sick with breathing difficulties etc which even with eventual death will be recorded as old age related, pneumonia etc ...... a routine over 55 death in many villages,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, COVID testing simply wont happen after their demise.

Any person that has been working in the tourist industry or exposed to any risk however remote should be routinely tested..

But the government would prefer the sweep under the carpet Covid management charade method and their citizens in the backwaters are not a priority.

1st July. Emergency decree rescinded. All restrictions lifted. Party time.

Not all. It seems you will still have to wear a mask by example... but the list of restrictions has not be fully defined yet. They still have 1 month to update it though.

Many Thais have been brain washed to believe that CV19 is a Farang disease. All the current reported cases are Thais returning from Ai Farang Countries..

The cases were Thai nationals in quarantine who recently returned from overseas, including four from Kuwait, six from Qatar, and one from India, said Taweesin Wisanuyothin, a spokesman for the government's coronavirus task force.

Yesterdays report.

Right. So, if you are a Thai national who has not recently travelled or are connected with someone who has recently travelled, then you might think from the recent reports that you are at no, or very low risk, of getting infected. You might then not be too worried about cooperating with distancing measures or happy to put up with lockdown measures.

Bit early to count any chickens. The monsoon season is notorious for bringing not just heavy rain but a deluge of colds, flu and other respiratory ailments to Thailand. If the COVID virus is still around, it could thrive in the cooler conditions.

Less sunshine also means fewer chances for us to get out into the sunshine and absorb vitamin D, which appears to offer at least some protection from potentially dangerous pathogens. If you are elderly and mostly homebound, it might be worth taking a D3 supplement.

I think the government have done a great job.  They have made the tin-pot dictatorships of Trump and Boris look like 3rd world banana republics. The danger now is for the government to listen to all the crackpots who want to open up too quickly and get the second wave.
