The Chinese have made more enemies than friends in the region. The USA should be able to count on the backing of Australia, Japan, S.Korea, U.K. and a few others. The Taiwan Strait is 110 miles wide, 5 times wider than the English Channel., Although China presents a formidable force, there is no guarantee who will back them in any move to take Taiwan. Russia? Okinawa is the closest supply base for the US and even that is debatable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan_Relations_Act

The problem with China taking Taiwan is that it's the tip of the iceberg. Who is next Vietnam, Cambodia. Same as when Hitler took the Sudetenland. Where do you draw the line? depends. taiwan was returned to china after japan was defeated, so it is part of china. but which china? the communists and the nationalists restarted their civil war interrupted by the japanese invasion. eventually the nationalists were forced to retreat to taiwan. the war has not ended. there is no peace treaty, no armistice. the peoples' republic of china claims sovereignty over mainland china AND taiwan. the republic of china does as well. most countries have a one-china policy, but they're usually vague about choosing which china. (not to be confused with un recognition) they've managed a peaceful coexistance, as long as taiwan does not declare independence. the proc prefers a diplomatic reunification with the roc. war is messy, and they don't want to "destroy the village in order to save it." the proc would prefer a peaceful resolution. but if trump decides to recognize taiwan independance, put an embassy in taipei, build a us base on the island...... The world only condemned Tiananmen Square because CCP failed to keep a lid on it. China had full support from Kissinger and other western parasites, the day after Tiananmen Kissinger referred to Deng Xiaoping (China's leader) as "one of the great reformers in Chinese history" and a man "who chose a more humane and less chaotic course" for China. The US also assisted China with arming and training the Khmer Rouge. China is not going to be shunned now especially when so much money has been poured into China to build the infrastructure needed for the "one belt one road" initiative.

Popular Post sqwakvfr
China is building a large military. But this large and modern military lacks one very important thing: Combat Experience. No one knows how you will react when “bullets start flying, a fellow soldier is blown up and his body a parts have been blown off.”. Some will react with bravery and honor but some will freeze. The US Military some will say has too much combat experience in the last 18 years. This is evident by the number of former and current military members with physical and mental injuries. But man to man I would take the US Military over the Chinese any day. Also Taiwan recently purchased 100 M1 Abrams Tanks. Taiwan is expecting an airborne or beach assault by the Chinese Army. Therefore the initial Chinese Force will be lightly armored and the best weapon for that is the 105MM Main Gun of the Abrams. Of course given time the main Chinese Force will land and then it will be a different battle. This battle scenario is part of the curriculum of senior of Military Leaders when they attend War College. Only time will tell if this battle actually occurs? I sincerely hope not because it could get out of control quickly. “Saber Rattling” is the normal course of relations between Superpowers and hopefully this is just the latest version. 1

When I lived in Taiwan co-workers, friends were pretty evenly split on the One Country Two Systems model. On the pro side they were pretty sure they could keep the NT$, freedom of speech, autonomous democracy, and the worst that would happen they would exchange an ROC passport for a PRC one. Over the past few years as I've talked to them, that sentiment has evaporated as they have watched HK. I don't believe the KMT will ever be the pro Beijing party it was if it ever wants to get elected again.
