Pattaya: Deckchairs will open at weekend - just one problem: There are NO tourists!

Sophon Cable TV reporters went down to the beach in Pattaya and found a few deckchair operators had set up their operations.

After the beach was opened on Monday they are being allowed to resume their trade on Saturday.

But the "new normal" will be quite unlike before and besides their report indicated that there were no tourists and the beach was deathly quiet.

Kitrawee, 24, said the last two months had been desperate as he had no income to support his family. It was good that the beach was now open and good news that he could utilise his 7x14 meter pitch again but there were a number of problems.

Firstly, there was no one to sit down.

Secondly, social distancing meant that he could only have 50% of his previous capacity.

Thirdly, the vendors in Pattaya and Jomtien would not be allowed to operate on the second and third weeks of every month from Tuesday to Thursday in order to let the beach regenerate.

Sophon said that Jomtien and Pattaya beaches would take turns.

In addition the authorities were replacing old, dead palm trees to beautify the beaches, they said.

Maybe it's in the forum already...

Have you seen the pictures of Bang Saen beach (closest to Bangkok) of yesterdays holiday?

Completely clogged roads. Road closures necessary. Thousands and thousands.

At the same time: Pattaya fairly quiet.

Curious what it will look on the coming weekend.

They always wanted a natural beach and it did improve the jetski rental situation imho..

Do you think this has anything to do with you being there?

Probably most of these visitors are TV members eager to walk in the footsteps of a local celebrity...

Umm regenerate the beach what could they possibly mean from Tuesday to Thursday sounds like the work of another Thai academic  ????

Its not only tourists that put their bums on deck chairs, especially of a weekend, a noisy Thai family invasion was common place prior to C19 restrictions.

Confirmed: the chairs feel lonely on the beach.

while there is no drinking or eating on the pattaya beaches they will remain empty

I guarantee if you went to ban Saen they would all be drinking and eating on the beach alcohol included

for your stupid rules that is what you get

the people who are coming here are middle class and Hiso Thais.

It is a status thing with them to be here and a selfie photo op for Facebook/Instagram.

"blow up"?

Do you mean pumped up?

Sounds perfect , go Pattaya , sit under the clouds and rain at the beach, not be allowed to eat and drink. And when the night comes you can wander the empty streets before going back to the hotel to “take care of yourself.”

Ah this is the life ...

The "old, dead palm trees" in Jomtien are the ones they planted last year. Already about 25% have been cut down. Thai landscape planning at its best!

Heck, you've got to feel sorry for these people, they pay City Hall good money for their pitches on the beach, but for months now they've had no income and through no fault of their own. I wonder of any of them even got the 5,000 Baht/month pittance from the government? When things resume, even if they can sell food and drink again, their income is going to be 50% of previous levels at best due to social distancing, and probably much less as there simply won't be anything like as many people around. So will City Hall cut the fees they charge the vendors by 50%-75%? Answers please on a postcard to....

Check the weather forecast for this coming weekend and I think these deck chairs and sunshades would provide ideal shelter from the rain!!

Is 50 percent capacity a problem, when there are no one to sit down...????

Sounds like a new strain of coronavirus.

who and what regerates beaches??

I have never ever known beaches in Uk to be closed to regenerate ANY ONE ELSE ??

Blackpools fanmous beaches NEVER EVER CLOSE come summer or winter !!!

EXCEPT if have SNOW on them .....

No beer bars, no hooker, what the hell, who needs pattaya then?

Ah I forgot, we just visit pattaya coz of the nice beaches, the nice weather and good food.

Hurry put some Mannequins in the seats and send a picture to Prayut Chan-o-cha cha . Look at all the tourist?????

"Firstly, there was no one to sit down.

Secondly, social distancing meant that he could only have 50% of his previous capacity."

Thirdly, it does not make much difference if his actual capacity is only 50% of the previous capacity if there are no customers.

I'm sure the Soi dogs will find them useful.
