Biden wins enough delegates to clinch U.S. Democratic nomination

(Reuters) - Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden secured enough delegates to formally clinch the Democratic presidential nomination on Friday, setting the stage for a challenge to President Donald Trump in the November election.

A candidate needs at least 1,991 delegates to secure the nomination. Biden crossed the threshold when results came late on Friday after seven states and the District of Columbia held presidential primaries earlier in the week.

The achievement was a formality after Biden became the presumptive nominee when his main rival, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, quit the race in April.

"It was an honor to compete alongside one of the most talented groups of candidates the Democratic party has ever fielded — and I am proud to say that we are going into this general election a united party," Biden said on Friday.

At one point, the field had more than 20 candidates, with contenders dropping out as their chances faded.

Biden had a slow start and recorded his first win in South Carolina at the end of February.

After that, some other candidates seen as centrist or moderate dropped out before Super Tuesday votes on March 3, when the highest number of delegates were up for grabs and Biden won key contests.

It then became a two-horse race with Sanders, who was seen as a progressive candidate challenging incumbent Democrats.

While Sanders was a front-runner after early races, Biden carried his Super Tuesday momentum into subsequent contests and increased his lead.

Sanders quit the race upon seeing no path to the nomination as the novel coronavirus outbreak made campaigning and outreach difficult.

A U.S. senator and then vice president under President Barack Obama, Biden has promised to choose a woman as his running mate, with several black candidates likely in the running.

Hahaha. This proves he is willing to say anything. Those debates were painful to watch.

Not a good candidate, hopefully good enough to beat Trump. Choice of VP will be incredibly important for Biden, but also for Trump. Pence was thrown under the bus as head of the covid-19 taskforce, Trump will need someone else who can get him the votes Pence can't.

What are you talking about? 45 has already committed to sticking with Pence.

The stupidest thing imaginable would be to reelect 45.

Your sad Biden ,who goes out Campaigning and dividing America during looting and riots , while another American was out making a statement by preserving America’s historical buildings, churches,  that the radicals tried burning down ! Where was your concern for the first responders, national guard

Funny how DT will denounce anyone for doing what he himself does.  Who can forget the way he would attack Obama for too much golf?

But there may be some turmoil in clan Trump and we may soon be hearing about it.  Tiffany is appearing to harbor some counter-Trumpian sympathies, and did you see that "smile moment" with the current missus a few days ago?

But it's a sure bet that they have a few brickbats to hit Joe with, and they'll be coming down full force right before the election.

Compete? This was the most undemocratic process I've ever witnessed in America. Here are the winners:

Thanks for linking Biden’s speech.

From your comments you obviously either didn’t listen to it or did but didn’t understand it.

Perhaps you have trouble listening to a Democrat, if so try the video offerings from The Lincoln Project and Republicans Against Trump.

The criticism of Trump and his failures in this crisis are valid, essential and coming from across the political spectrum.

Again, thank you for linking Biden’s speech, it was exactly what needs to be said.

Never liked Biden, another misogynist touchy feely kinda guy and how he turned on Anita Hill was uncalled for.

But the other guy is also a misogynist touchy feely kinda guy.

Living in Thailand, I believe in HEART - JAI. Biden is jai-dee. The other has none. Better of both evils will win in November.

There is only 1 poll I've seen so far that really tries to touch on the truth of who will win in November. It is this one:

https://247newsaroundtheworld.com/politics/us-election-2020-donald-trump-on-course-for-victory-despite-protests-exclusive/

And here is the key question they ask which nobody else does:

"...only 37 percent of Trump voters would want their friends and family to know how they had voted while 74 percent of Biden supporters are comfortable with it being known..."

It is this hidden support for Trump which is why he won in 2016, and why he will win again in November. Because not only are people embarassed to tell their friends and family of support for the demagogue, they are also embarassed to tell pollsters.  There is a significant hidden vote out there from people who do not want to be viewed as Trump supporters, but when that curtain closes and they feel finally anonymous without all the social pressures and shame to conform, they support his policies more than the status quo.

So listen to the polls all you want, but don't believe them. Biden is simply a bad remake of the Hillary Chronicles of 2016. The epic performed poorly in theaters 4 years ago, and it will get even worse reviews this time around.

Biden is no prize  candidate but the way things are going in the country lately Goofy could beat Trump like a drum.

Listen America (Democrats)......All you had to do was find one guy under 70 who didn't propose radical ideas, someone center that both sides could agree on.

When Trump gets another 4 yrs in the White House, Dems will only have themselves to blame. Therapy is expensive, better start saving up.

You're assuming that the Democrats don't want Trump to win?

Yeah, another 4 years of Trump blunders there might not be a Republican Party.
