Chulalongkorn University prof warns of second virus wave, advises govt to crack down on unsafe gatherings

Chulalongkorn University professor of medicine Dr Thira Woratanarat criticised the unsafe gathering of people as a high-risk factor for contracting Covid-19 and suggested that the government take action against venues or places that allow such events to be organised.

The doctor said on his Facebook page yesterday (June 7) that tourists were reported to visit Bang Saen Beach in Chon Buri in huge numbers. Many did not maintain social distance or wear medical masks, he wrote.

Meanwhile, a theatre was allowed to organise an event for fans of actors and actresses. The government should exercise legal measures to stop these things, he advised.

“Some people are still scared of the Covid-19 situation, since getting infected is easy and a vaccine hasn’t been developed yet. However, under the third phase of lockdown relaxation, people are living their lives as if the situation is normal. This is a violation of others’ health,” he wrote.

The doctor warned that if the government was not strict, the virus would spread again or a second wave could hit Thailand.

Right. People will hear this warning and think about what if we had a second wave and what if that one was twice as bad as the first? That would still mean that only around 100 people would die and that many die every two days from vehicle accidents. Manufactured worry about a second wave is not going to be compelling given how light the first one was.

Well, he would have been dismayed if he'd been in our village this morning. They had their annual blessing of the rice planting. Just about everyone in the village, plus many from elsewhere were gathered there and the monks of course.

No masks, no social distancing, all feeding from communal dishes. And that is generally true hereabouts now. It's as if Covid 19 never existed. And by and large it's true. There was only one case in our province and that was over 100kms away. Even Phu Yai Ban has stopped wearing a mask and has ceased her daily diatribes.

Nonsense. And panic mongering. Thira should be arrested and locked up now. The only way we will get a second wave, is if the government is careless about letting in infected international travelers. Covid is gone from Thailand. Zapped. DOA. KIA. Let it go. Let the people get back to work, and stop the goons who are collecting full salaries from preventing this from happening.

There was a sit in the other day in BKK because of someone being abducted in Cambodia. Bad people spreading the C19 virus.

Thailand didn't even have a first wave.

It is now virus free- so we are told- and it is an obvious precondition that in order to catch a virus there has to be a virus to catch.

There is no way of knowing the actual situation in Thailand because testing has been so limited. So I consider broadcasting that the virus is gone here to be misleading. It might be. That is all anyone can honestly say.

So three weeks ago people were packed on the BTS and queuing to enter malls, and no local transmission since.  It has a 5-7 day incubation period - so his science is based on what?  It's no wonder Chula does not make it into the top 200 universities in the world.

But if he wants something to help him join the fear bandwagon, how about this theory of my own:

Thailand imported the original, less virulent strain direct from Wuhan, whereas UK, Europe, Iran and US got a more virulent mutation.  That may be why US and UK have higher rates and why all Thailand's recent cases are imported.  So when tourist flights resume, we get the second wave.

Or an alternative theory is that Thailand achieved herd immunity in December/January due to the 500,000 arrivals from Wuhan.

Or the most likely theory - most people in US, UK and Middle East are fat bastards.

That's a bit unfair to people in those countries.  There are plenty of fat ba-steeds here in LOS.  What is true, just an hour ago outside Lotus in Wang Sai Phun a fatty pulled up on a scooter.  I thought to myself if I  chopped his legs off I  still couldn't get him in a 200L drum!  An hour before in the Sak Lek hardware store we sometimes use a Chinese Thai guy 6' 8" and fatter than the first mentioned guy.  So,  plentry of fat Thai's out there.

I suspect that Thailand did have a first wave, but it went completely undetected. A 'silent epidemic'.

Recall that it has now been established that the first recorded case in China was in mid November. Genealogists have done some research that suggests that it could have been around as early as mid October.

There is no telling how many infected Chinese visited Thailand during the virus's first emergence and its detection at the end of December. Imagine, all those Chinese spreading their 'cold and flu' bugs around!

And no one realizing that it was actually Covid 19. No one was looking for it, or counting the cases, because no one knew it existed!

It's only a theory, but it could explain why the official count is so low.

Sounds like the professor is one of those people.

Or even more likely is that Western governments have been milking the virus to the last drop, in order to artificially boost their numbers, and to seize the opportunity to implement their agenda (a few trillions dollars for Wall Street and big business being part of it).

Otherwise, no second wave unless it is imported by opening the gates too quickly for mass tourism...

You're giving them too much credit, it does not make it into the top 800 universities in the world!!

How does one verify if a university professor is clinically mad ? It saddens me to think that this man is actually in a position where he "educates" members of the learning masses ????

Thais will only oblige if it's a full-on lockdown. Any, even the tiniest, crack in it and the cats are out of the bag. Generations of disobedience to idiotic rules from ivory towers have generated this aspect of Thainess. Won't change until Thailand is colonized. Chinese will take care of the attitude adjustments in their gulags.

It is one thing to be cautious, it is another to scaremonger

What if the unsafe gathering involves a top government official? Like, for example, if they are seen out in a large group eating dinner at a table with no face masks and no social distancing and eating out of the same dishes Thai style?

The doctor must have spent his life around the canals, rivers and lakes. Thailand has not had a wave yet. Hard to get a second wave until you get the first. There has only been a ripple here.

Gatherings at Government House are unsafe well I could not possibly comment.

I don't understand how Thailand went from one of the worst and most lax nations towards this virus in January, February and most of March, to the most overcautious and anxious ridden nation? Thailand has almost nothing to worry about with no domestic infections in 2 whole weeks! Here in England we have over 1,000 new confirmed cases daily, and everything is almost back to normal here

It's becoming rather boring since every "professor" and his dog has some world changing opinions about covid 19! Be damned to all of these "experts", most of the modern world's economies are down the drain because of these self opinionated fools who are protected by their tenured positions! Get out into the real world and see the results of your "advice"!

basically the person, i wont call them a journalist, who wrote the article went on this professors facebook page and that's the source... there is no indication that he even bothered to contact and interview the professor.

it's nonsense just cutting and pasting what is in effect a cut and paste article here. but it happens all the time. urgh.

Not every "international traveller" is

a) infected or

b) a tourist and

c) Covid19 is alive and well around us.

Seems that Chulalongkorn is in a steady decline since 2016 where it was in the 601 - 800 grouping. That just about sums up the whole situation!

Someone will also have to explain to this Dr Thira Woratanarat that there has been no Covid-19 in Thailand for two weeks and that he does not understand anything about economics and that it would be good to start cutting his salary by 80% due to the spread of the fear it causes. damage to the Thai economy.

Since apparently no one in Thailand has Covid-19(other than those returning from overseas and in quarantine) there is no danger at all of it spreading.
