The Ministry of Health said yesterday, four people had died and another 12 hospitalised in Banteay Meanchey province after consuming herbal wine under the label “Tang Kouy”. Director of Banteay Meanchey provincial health department Le Chansangvath said the incidents took place on Monday and Tuesday. The victims consumed the herbal wine “Tang Kouy” along with food at four different locations in Malai district and Poipet city. There were between two and five people in each group.

He said after they consumed the wine, 16 people became ill with symptoms such as headache, difficulty breathing, vomiting , blurred vision and chest pain. Four who were in critical condition died, while the other 12 were sent to the hospital for treatment and are being monitored. “Our health officials have collected the samples of the herbal wine called “Tang Kouy” along with some food [the victims ate with the herbal wine] such as freshwater shrimp, fish and vegetables to the laboratory to find out the exact cause of the poisoning as to whether it came from the wine or the food,” he said.

“According to our initial investigation, the poisoning might have been caused by the consumption of the herbal wine, as all four groups had consumed two to four bottles each, Mr Chansangvath said. “Those who died drank more of the herbal wine.” He identified the dead victims as Chhorn Chheoun, 32, a resident of O’ Sampor village, O’ Sammpor commune, Malai district; Khlaing Chetra, 27, a resident of Chamnom Koeut village, Chamnom commune, Mongkul Borei district; Marn Neak, 22, a resident of Phnom Roung village, Boeung Beng commune, Malai district; and Mai Kong, 35, a construction worker in Poipet city.

Thai wines taste god-awful.  Maybe that’s your warning.  Of course, Thai Customs slaps huge import duties on imported wines—to protect this industry.

Yes indeed - Thai protectionism by the "establishment" business families. A wide range of quality imported wines are available in most supermarkets here in Siem Reap, Cambodia, at competitive prices - no "Thai-like" ripoffs!!
