WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said he worries President Donald Trump will try to "steal" the November election but he is confident soldiers would escort Trump from the White House if he loses and does not recognize the result.

"It's my greatest concern, my single greatest concern: This president is going to try to steal this election," Biden said in an interview broadcast late on Wednesday on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show."

Biden did not specify how he thought Trump, a Republican, might cheat. But the former vice president cited Trump's opposition to mail-in voting and said Democrats would have lawyers present at voting locations across the country to look out for Republican efforts to suppress the vote.

Tim Murtaugh, communications director for Trump's re-election campaign, responded to Biden's comments. “This is just another brainless conspiracy theory from Joe Biden as he continues to try to undermine confidence in our elections," he said.

"President Trump has been clear that he will accept the results of the 2020 election," he added.

Trump has repeatedly attacked voting by mail, proclaiming without evidence that the expected increase in mail-in voting would lead to widespread fraud in the Nov. 3 contest.

Biden said recent comments by former senior military officials criticizing Trump's response to nationwide protests over police brutality made him confident the U.S. military would intervene if Trump refused to accept the election results.

"I'm absolutely convinced they will escort him from the White House with great dispatch," Biden said.

Biden has often said publicly he worries Trump would try to cheat. But his rhetoric has escalated recently as most national polls show the former vice president leading the president, while Trump has stepped up criticism of voting by mail.

During the 2016 presidential election campaign, Trump refused to say during a final debate with Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton that he would concede if Clinton won.

Election experts and officials expect a surge in mail-in voting this November due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, and warn the process could be marred by chaos of the type already seen in primary elections held in states during the viral outbreak.

Large number of mail ballots not delivered in time to be cast or counted could lead to legal challenges over election results. Counting mail ballots also take more time because a voter's identity must first be validated, raising the prospect that the election outcome won't be known well past Election Day, experts say.

A growing number of former senior military leaders have criticized the president over his handling of the civil unrest following the May 25 killing of George Floyd, a black man whose death in custody of the Minneapolis police set off protests for police reform and racial justice.

Former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis accused the president earlier this month of trying to divide America and roundly denounced a militarization of the U.S. response to civil unrest.

The current chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army General Mark Milley, on Thursday said he made a mistake by joining Trump as he walked to a church for a photo opportunity last week after authorities dispersed protesters with tear gas and rubber bullets near the White House.

So.... Democrats want to change the rules for voting in a presidential election, right at the finish line and at the last minute, and its Trump who's trying to cheat?

Absurd.

Oh it will, you just watch. After weeks of promoting protests and giving cover for rioters in the middle of a pandemic they are going to do a full 180 and go right back to the same trash narrative about pandemic safety so THEY can steal the election.

Because more Americans voting is bad?

Where is your outrage over the recent vote gerrymandering in Georgia?

Every single western democracy on the planet has polling stations/places and requires some form of voter ID and for the person to present themselves for a vote. There are states in the USA that dont even require an ID to vote (All of them are democrat states)

And yet somehow, and for some reason, the American left has deemed this procedure as racist voter suppression because they know it will benefit them.

If Americans would be smart then that would be no issue at all.

If 99% would vote against Trump then it's unlikely that Trump or fox would try to overthrow that election.

But obviously lots of Americans are not so smart. Some would even vote again for moron Trump. Amazing!

Why even have an election ?

Pretty rich coming from the Trump campaign, when his boss is the king of "brainless conspiracy theories."

Both sides of the fence look bad right now, the Chinese will be very happy!

This is a failure of Biden's immediate family for not doing an intervention and putting him into a home.

Just love the sound of desperation in the trump supporters lol trump can’t go the coup route now because he now knows the military won’t back him his only chance imo is to do his level best to disrupt and deny the vote to as many as possible otherwise he out and quite possibly to jail the worm has turned the spell is broken come on November!!!!

Mail-in voting is not illegal. Among those who voted by mail in 2018:  45, his daughter, his son-in-law, Steve Bannon. 45 and Bannon even used non-legal addresses, which is a Federal crime.

When it looks as if Repub efforts to suppress the vote--by doing such things as everyone saw Tuesday in Georgia, like closing polling places in largely Black neighborhoods, or having a sudden rash of broken voting machines in large Dem districts---then Repubs get all worried about the kind of voting 45 and his cohorts already do.  Sounds.....hypocritical, which is a synonym of republican.

Some of these tactics will be obviated in November because patriots like Michael Bloomberg and Tom Steyer are going to fund thousands of buses to transport those inconvenienced by poll closures to open polling stations.

As for the military removing loser 45 by force, I suspect the volunteer list will be massive, and some might even recall the words of 45 when he spoke to a police group in NY a year or two ago, "Don't be so nice when you put them in the back of the cruiser".

Of course, given that 45 is already an 'unindicted co-conspirator' in the State of NY, it's possible NY State Marshals will cuff and perpwalk him at 12:01 on 20 January 2021 right at President Biden is making his Inaugural Speech to what will likely be the largest crowd ever. Those NY State officials might even have to compete with new Attorney General Kamala Harris, who will be on the Inaugural Stage with arrest warrants for 45 and his family. South Korea, a modern developed and democratic nation, has jailed at least two former leaders for corruption, so there is international precedent in OECD nations. Bonus: there is no Tweeting from Leavenworth.

Glorious days are coming again to America.

If the US military is like any other modern western military (and it is, apart perhaps from a tendency to splatter the battlefield with air delivered munitions, targeting allies and enemies with little apparent discrimination) then they will have contingency plans for a wide variety of events, which probably include a President refusing to accept electoral defeat and hand over to his opponent. after Congress and The Supreme Court have had their say. Bear in mind that their oath of allegiance is, I believe to the Constitution rather than to the President.

These plans will be highly classified, the President and Vice President may not even be aware of the details. However they are a political radio-active potato, and Mr Biden and his team would do well to keep silent on the matter unless or until it comes to pass.

He looks just like Snowball and Cookie (my Chihuahuas) did when my daughter brought home a half consumed bucket of KFC from one of her outings with her pals last week.

As a non American I want to see an end to Trump. But Biden is anything but convincing. He mumbles a lot.

just enlighten us, please, how many times has Trump voted by mail, you don't know? ok let me help you

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-ever-voted-by-mail/

David Jolly, a former Republican congressman from Florida, was correct when he tweeted Trump has voted by mail. Trump has used the absentee voting system in at least three elections: Trump voted by mail during New York’s mayoral election in 2017, cast an absentee ballot during the state’s midterm election the following year, and again used a vote-by-mail ballot in Florida’s primary election in 2020.

In 2017, Trump, first lady Melania Trump and their daughter, Ivanka Trump, all cast absentee votes during New York’s mayoral race. These votes made headlines at the time because it was reported that Melania and Ivanka filled out their ballots incorrectly (and therefore were invalid) while the president listed the wrong birth date:

I fear a repeat of the infamous 146 days long Hoover and Roosevelt presidential translation. Trump is such a sore loser that he will go for the scorch earth nuclear option by dragging the long transition and wrecking the economy and possibly violence by his fanatics. He will do down history in unfavorable mention.

This is what Biden is worried about? Seems to me he has much much more to worry about than that. As for stealing the election, he will getting illegals votes, fraudulent mail in votes, and rigged apps and he's worries the man who insists on in person voting with proper id will steal the election. i didn't realize Biden had such a good sense of humor! ????

It does make sense but I honestly wasn't sure what he said at first. Doesn't have the greatest diction.... and honestly, who actually says "with great dispatch", do you think that's understandable to the man on the street?

EDIT: If you were being sarcastic I retract that comment.
