Steroid dexamethasone reduces deaths among patients with severe COVID-19 - trial shows

LONDON (Reuters) - Giving low doses of the generic steroid drug dexamethasone to patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 reduced death rates by around a third among those with the most severe cases of infection, trial data showed on Tuesday.

The results, described as a "major breakthrough" by scientists leading the UK-led clinical trial known as RECOVERY, suggest the drug should immediately become standard care in patients treated in hospital with the pandemic disease, the researchers said.

"This is a result that shows that if patients who have COVID-19 and are on ventilators or are on oxygen are given dexamethasone, it will save lives, and it will do so at a remarkably low cost," said Martin Landray, an Oxford University professor who is co-leading the trial.

His co-lead investigator, Peter Horby, said dexamethasone - a generic steroid widely used in other diseases to reduce inflammation - is "the only drug that's so far shown to reduce mortality - and it reduces it significantly."

"It is a major breakthrough," he said.

There are currently no approved treatments or vaccines for COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus which has killed more than 431,000 globally.

Because otherwise doctors might be reluctant to give it to their patients? Because doctors are more likely to listen to Trump than to Anthony Fauci? Or to the Surgeon General? I knew Trump was chief executive of the USA. I didn't know that he was also Chief Medical Officer.

Hey, who needs professional medical advice when you have a self proclaimed stable genius guiding everyone?

Yes great news on this, cheap as chips drug, lets hope more treatments like this are discovered.

Had the drug had been used to treat patients in the UK from the start of the pandemic, up to 5,000 lives could have been saved, researchers say. "There is a clear, clear benefit. The treatment is up to 10 days of dexamethasone and it costs about £5 per patient. So essentially it costs £35 to save a life. This is a drug that is globally available."

Wow, interesting questions you ask just because I hope Trump promotes a drug that helps people. Who has ever said Trump was any sort of medical officer? I simply hope more Americans get effective treatment. Why does it seem to upset you so much?

People will always need professional medical advice.

Because it's odd that it's hope for Trump's recommendation that is your immediate response to this situation and not the recommendation of Fauci or similarly eminent and qualified persons whose opinions will actually carry weight in the medical community.

Given how wrong Fauci has been on everything, I don't see him with much credibility at all.

don't you love doctors playing with patients like it were guinea pigs, and the winner will get the nobel price ...

a bit like nazi germany, but nah, people forgot about that

low vitamin D levels, low immunity, 1 baht a day worth of vitamin D could PREVENT most cases

'trial data showed'

But zero trial data presented and clearly not a clinical-based trial. Fundamentally, so-called data is just antedotal information, much like what we heard about alleged effectiveness of hydoxychloroquine (now proven ineffective at best).

Only after he first bought shares in the companies who produced it.

WHO welcomes preliminary results about dexamethasone use in treating critically ill COVID-19 patients

“This is the first treatment to be shown to reduce mortality in patients with COVID-19 requiring oxygen or ventilator support,”

Isn't the jury still out on hydroxychloroquine since the Lancet article disputing its efficacy in late-stage COVID cases was discredited?

There appears to be a good case against using ventilation, and intubation in particular, in elderly patients, as it may kill more than it saves.

Studies in China, the United Kingdom and Seattle found mortality rates as high as 90% among patients on ventilators.

The UK leading the way again. When the going gets tough it's easy to separate the wheat from the chaff.

No doubt the Brit haters and the self loathing, hand wringing UK liberals will be along shortly to try and pour cold water on this but it's great news for everyone around the world. Well done to the UK led team ????.

It’s a widely available Generic, there’s no money in promoting it.

You’d have to have a pretty craven mind to think that anyone would have issues for this work and it’s outcome just because of their nationality....

Why do you think I believe everything Trump says? I don't believe everything ANYONE says, especially anti-Trump zealots.

Because Trump is a guy that wants to make money out of everything. Shown by how he always expects something for what he does. If you still don't understand he is a low life then your beyond help. Anyway you credit your name as a die hard Trump follower.

That was just a way for Trump to bring some positive news to hide all his failures.

Oh really?

I don't think some of the loony liberals would have issues with the UK doing great work on C-19, I know it. They're so guilt ridden and hateful towards their own country that they are terrified it could lead to national pride. ????.

Don't believe me?
