If this post is redundant, can you direct me to the area where I can get information? As of 2020, under what circumstances do you need to take a written/road test when obtaining a Thai license? Today I was told I need to take a road test after I showed an expired Thai license. Can you avoid a road test if you simply show a current foreign license that has a photo? I am clear on the other documentation such as a physical examination. I cannot recall any foreign friends needing to take a road test to get a Thai license if they already had a valid foreign driver's license. Perhaps my mistake was showing an expired Thai license. Would I have been better off just showing my US license?

Johng,

Thank You, I will go back and try again using my US license. I have a yellow book and Thai ID card.

Let me know if you learn anything new.

Along with US DL you need an International Drivers License to avoid the driving part.

Not necessarily so - it may be different at different DLT's.

IF someones national license is in English an IDP is not normally required (at DLT area 3 anyway).

Op: You don't need to do the Road Test (unless something has changed recently) - you just need to show your National Drivers License and can apply for a 2 year Temp Thai License.

All the Op needs:

1) Pink ID (and Yellow Book, although the Yellow Book part wasn't needed)

2) Existing US License

3) Passport ID and Visa Page

4) 2 Colour Photo Copies of all.

5) Medical Certificate (simple MCU at a local clinic - tell them its for a driving licence, they'll know)

- Go to DLT - queue for a queue ticket !... at this first station your documents will be checked, you may either be refused for some missing documentation, have to make more photocopies, or you have everything you'll be given a queue number.

- Next step will be the minor tests (peripheral colour test, colour blindness check, Proximity check (two sticks), reaction test).

- Next step will be to watch a 50min video (K.Suay, K. Jai Raun etc - a very juvinile video but it must be watched).

- Next step, queue, pay, have the photo taken, receive 2y temporary license.

How long has your Thai license been expired...?

If your existing Thai license has been expired for more than a year, the Op will have to start over again.

If less than a year, he can obtain a renewal and should be able to get a 5 year license (if he's on a Non-Immigrant Visa).

The problem is my Thai License expired a very long time ago, 2552. I am going to take Richard Smith's advice and prepare the documents and just show my US license.

I went to the information booth at the DLT and showed my Thai license. When they saw that, they told me I had to start over. They were not interested in my foreign license after seeing the Thai license. This time I will go back and only show  my valid US license.

Also, I will make sure I ask for a 2 year temporary license.

Thanks for the help

I'd be more concerned with the written test than the actual driving test. RSmith talked about a National Drivers License. Not sure what that is.
