Schools nationwide have been instructed to tighten food hygiene rules to protect students from Covid-19 before they reopen next month.

The Health Department has ordered school operators to provide hand-sanitiser at canteen entrances for students and staff, while imposing social distancing at food and drink service points.

The department said afternoon breaks could be divided up in order to avoid crowding in canteens. Meanwhile canteens must be disinfected frequently and cutlery and dishes sanitised by soaking them in water at 80C for 30 seconds.

In addition, all cooked food must be warmed every 2 hours. Cooks are instructed to wear masks and gloves, and to wash their hands after handling cash or other unhygienic objects.

Finally, water systems in each school must be checked and repaired, ensuring chlorine levels of 0.5 to 1 milligram per litre.

Leaving cooked food out for 2 hours doesn't seem very hygienic to me, and if it is warmed, it can stay out another 2 hours????
