Fast-acting Thailand and South Korea hold key to dodging 'second wave'

Lessons from first coronavirus wave show need to impose strict policies quickly

The world is bracing for a "second wave" of coronavirus infections

How best to prepare for the dreaded surge is not an easy question to answer. A host of variables are at play, including the type of political system, the level of economic development and the willingness of citizens and businesses to accept restrictions.

But an analysis of global government responses so far shows an unmistakable pattern: swift action was the key to successful containment. If containment measures were not taken before daily new case numbers reached 0.5 per 100,000 people, those countries almost invariably failed to rein in the virus's spread.

Nikkei analyzed the correlation between Oxford University's government response stringency index and new daily infections in relation to population.

I can't explain Thailands apparent 'success' but putting them in the same camp as South Korea in COVID response is a farce.    Thailand did nothing at all until March, had the first reported

  • thailand sure has done a good job of the covid-19 and must be congratulated for their efforts. do not let the guard down, however, to avoid second wave of infections.

Thailand did nothing at all until March, had the first reported case outside china, and even when they did shut airports down, unless you lived in a major hub, literally nothing changed over the weeks thereafter. My province you wouldn't even have known there was a virus other than some things were closed down and you couldn't buy booze for a while.

totally different experience. Where i am all was locked down. Where it mattered the most BKK things were quickly locked down. It was litterly a ghost town. So Thailand did well, US and Uk for instance are examples of failure.

Thailand acted far faster then many other countries in closing the border. The UK never closed the borders and look how bad it got over there. Almost the worst in Europe.

What B/S

Posted Feb 18 Thai Visa

The Thai government is considering adding China and India to the list of countries eligible for visa exempt entry to Thailand.

Currently, both Chinese and Indian tourists are required to obtain a visa on arrival (VOA) before entering Thailand.

Posted March 05 Thai Visa

The Thai government on Thursday announces new compulsory quarantine measure for arrivals from four countries and two territories in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

I can't find the issue that showed Suvarnabhumi Airport totally full of incoming Chinese after they where supposedly forbidden to come into thailand.

The loonies in the states have got a hold of this fake news and are playing it up big.

What B/S everywhere

You will get as many waves as are allowed.

Fast acting thailand is a BS way to look at it as some posters will remind from feb /march.

They took away people's freedom to control them and continued it even with the very low figures.

Dont seem have any fast acting to remove it.

Remains to be seen if and when they will allow their tourist industry jobs to return.

Yinn, Thailand has done an exceptional job in keeping the COVID-19 virus transmission rate as low as possible. Full credit goes to our Khun Prayut Chan O Cha for his strategic enforcement and timely suppression of the border entry points and airport lockdowns.

Khun Prayut has implemented all the correct procedures and policies to assist in zero to minimal infection rates. I don't listen to the farang nayers, some posters don't even live in Thailand, they just want to moan & whinge because it's like taking medicine ...they feel better after their rant.  lol

I should not have read beyond the original article in this thread. The subsequent banter has lowered my intelligence measurably. Not that I was all that smart to begin with.

Pretty sure @bodga is referring to his own thoughts rather than the virus.

Exactly. Even if you believe the 400,000 reported deaths that's less than 1% of the world deaths in a NORMAL year. Hardly a blip.
