British embassy appoints assistant

Pattaya workload increasing The British embassy has announced the salaried appointment of Ms Sasamon Khempookeaw, aged 34, as consular assistant for the Pattaya area.

She will assist the honorary consul Barry Kenyon carry out his duties which have increased massively in the past few years. Until recently, Sasamon was chief telephone operator at Fairtex hotel and sports club and has also worked at a number of Bangkok and Pattaya resorts. She studied at the institute of languages and airline business before graduating at Ramkhamheng university in 1999.

The British foreign office, based in London, agreed the appointment after research indicated that Pattaya is a consular hot-spot where the workload has doubled in the last few years. The main consular responsibilities are dealing with DBNs (Distressed British Nationals) of all types, checking on the deaths of British passport holders, prison visiting and police liaison on several fronts.

Barry Kenyon said, “Purely as examples, the number of British deaths in Pattaya has doubled in the last three years and there has been a huge growth in the number of people needing letters from the embassy because of changes in the immigration rules for foreigners on long visas.” He added that hopes of having a publicly accessible office in Pattaya had faded for the time being.

Sasamon will have a training programme in Pattaya and Bangkok and will work-shadow Barry before assuming more responsibility later in the year. For the time being, there remains just one Pattaya phone number 08 1782 7363.

They can be found without prior appointment at the Meesen restaurant, in the carpark area of Pattaya immigration police Jomtien soi 5, from 9.00 am – 9.30 am every weekday except Thai public holidays.

Well obviously they must have scoured Thailand to find an over-qualified telephone operator for the post. Must have some outstanding attributes. What next for her promotion prospects ?!!!!!

A hard working Chap and deserves a LOT of praise.........

Now stand to Attention........ :D

Interview from last year with good old Stick...... :o

Shoul be made compulsive READING for all British Tourists to Patti....in fact ALL N-T tourists....from anywhere,

Barry Who?

His name appears more often in the Pattaya press than George Bush, David Beckham and Madonna all put together, but he isn't famous.

He has a classic short back and sides haircut, but he has never been in the military.

He was born in Liverpool, but he doesn't care for football. He drops by the police station most mornings, but he isn't a criminal out on bail reporting in.

As nice a guy as he is, he's probably someone you don't actually want to meet.

If you do come to his attention, odds are that you've got yourself into a spot of bother.

Just who could I be talking about? Barry Kenyon, of course! :D

Barry Kenyon is the Honorary Consul (Pattaya) for the British Embassy and yesterday the erudite Brit allowed me an hour of his precious time to talk about his role as the British Embassy's man in Pattaya.....with thanks from Stick....

Questions...

How many Brits are there in Pattaya......?

So what is your title and what exactly does your role ?

There's no shortage of suspicious deaths..........?

What's the most common reason for arrest.....?

What rights does a foreign national have if they get in trouble i.e. arrested, in Thailand. ..?

Is it only British nationals you assist or ........?

Do you get many complaints from guys who have been taken to the cleaners by the girls.......NEVER...................WOT ............ :D

So now they'll get an hours work done each day tehn :o

I saw Barry in shopping mall trying to drink a coffee one day; but his phone never stopped ringing! He is a thoroughly pleasant and helpful guy who works very hard and has been trying to get the Embassy to give him more support for a long time.

I agree!

John Barry Kenyon fully deserved his MBE honour from HM Queen of England, last year.
