Two hospitals ready to trial traditional Thai medicine in treating Covid-19

Research has begun in two hospitals on the use of Andrographis Paniculata (AP) to treat Covid-19.

AP has been used in traditional Thai medicine to treat various infections, including fever and cold.

The first phase focuses on safety, disinfecting activity, and reducing virus-cell division.

Dr Marut Jirasrattasiri, director-general of the Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine Department, said his department is collaborating with the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Chulabhorn Research Institute, and Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) in conducting a pilot study on the effects of AP extracts on patients with Covid-19 with approval from the Human Research Ethics Committee.

There was a request to conduct a trial on patients at the Bamrasnadura Infectious Disease Institute. However, since the current situation of people infected with Covid-19 in Thailand is getting better, there are very few patients in the programme.

The Department, therefore, requested the committee permission to change the hospital conducting human research to Samut Prakan Hospital and Bang Lamung Hospital since they are the main state quarantine centres accepting returnees from abroad.

The hospitals are ready since June 22 and can proceed immediately if any infected person meets the criteria for treatment.

He added that the infected people who meet the criteria to receive AP will be patients who have been confirmed to be infected with Covid-19 with symptoms lasting no more than 72 hours, with mild to moderate symptoms: fever, coughing and heating, which is usually not given any kind of medication.

In the first phase, six subjects will receive 60mg of AP extract capsules, or three times the normal dose, three times a day to see if the symptoms improve clearly. Another six patients will receive 100mg of AP extract capsules, or five times the normal dose, three times a day.

"The first phase of human trials will focus on safety. We want to know the efficiency both in people with and without symptoms, the effects on the blood, and the cytokine enzyme effect that is harmful to the lungs, heart, or liver.

"The extract will help reduce infection or disinfect. If it works well, it will be cheap and widely available. Importantly, the herbs are produced in Thailand 100 per cent," Dr Marut said.

My daughter went down with a bad dose of flu (?) in early February. This stuff was amongst the medicines the hospital gave her. She was poorly for a week, and of course I caught it from her. They gave me the same stuff. It certainly alleviates many of the symptoms that are common to flu and the dreaded lurgy. Quite what it does to the virus, well this trial presumably will tell, but isn't it the symptoms which kill you?

It seemed to work with us, certainly preferable to ingesting bleach and inserting UV lights in a variety of orifices!

The doctor seemed to think it was excellent stuff. I now keep some in my medicine drawer.

I am not a big fan of The Nation but did you even read the article? Therein lies the answer to your q.

Back in Feb Thai health experts were saying this was fake news..........

An article published by a Thai media site claims that a herb cultivated in southeast Asia, andrographis paniculata or “green chiretta”, can prevent and relieve symptoms of the novel coronavirus. The claim is misleading; Thai health experts said there is no scientific evidence that the herb can boost immunity or relieve the symptoms of the novel coronavirus.

Guess they've changed their minds.

They keep coming in from overseas... returnees.

If it quacks like a quack then it is a quack

Give Thai traditional medicine a chance.

This will be great news if this unnatural virus can be healed thru natural Thai herbs.

All pharmaceuticals have unpleasant side affects and only address symptoms.

Masks decrease Oxygen levels significantly.   "I can't breathe" right here in Thailand!

In Victorian England, people believed that illness was caused by miasma.

I get the feeling with say a 1-2% death rate in the world (allowing for those not tested), Thailand will deem it a great success claiming survival rates of 98/99% when used !

If you read the article, they will test it on the returned migrant workers in quarantine that test Covid-19 positive...

Next from hotspot Uk

With no danger of catching COVID in Thailand and a lot of controversey around its danger and whether it exists at all in a virus form. Where do they expect to find the idiots er volenteers to put their life in the hands of a profit based pharmaseutical company? Offer free nose jobs for volunteering and there would be a que a mile long. That is Thailand for you.

Odd no mention of a control group in the trial, ie., group receives a placebo. Looks like the trial is designed for a particular result.

Andrographis Paniculata is called Fah-Talai-Jone in Thai and is the local ''goto medicine'' for flu like symptoms. I can't talk for myself, as I've not been ill for many years, but it seems to work on my neighbours.

...will they also predict the lottery- numbers...?

Read it. It says state quarantine.

Serious question...is there a list of viruses that traditional Thai medicines cure?

Have tbey tried Bloodletting and leeches yet?

Aloe vera gel is effective against the herpes virus.

In the  usual  haste  to find  some  negative it seems overlooked that there is no claim this is a "cure"  for  covid-19.

It is an attempt to measure effectiveness in reducing symptoms and longevity of the infection.

A lot of medicines are based on plant-animal products , where they found the exact active substance and created the medicine . Saying this won't work , because it's just a plant just isn't the right approach . If there is a chance it might work , test and see . If it does , try find correct dose / try find active compound and what or how it works , so it creates new understanding .

No, they are conducting human trials to collect that scientific evidence that is missing.
