TOKYO/BANGKOK -- Travelers from Japan, South Korea and Thailand are now welcome in the European Union. But business groups and travel industry figures from the three countries do not expect a rush, citing remaining obstacles and a lingering fear of a coronavirus second wave.

The EU took the first step towards restoring global ties interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic on July 1, saying visitors from 15 countries, including the three from Asia, would now be allowed entry. The group is united in achieving low infection rates, according to the EU. But the most powerful business lobby in Japan said it expected only limited impact from the EU's move. "Japanese business travelers still need to undergo testing and a 14-day quarantine when they return to Japan," said one executive from the Japan Business Federation, or Keidanren. "As for European nationals living in Japan, they can't even come back to Japan."

In Thailand there was also caution. "I think business travelers would be the first group to go abroad when the EU opens up. But, I don't think Thais would like to travel abroad at this moment as they are not confident about hygiene standards out there," said Kritapas Patamanate, managing director of AOM Travel, a tour operator in Thailand.

The Hub of Hygiene speaks. I am sure Europe is listening with a keen sense of awe.

I read that and thought they must be having a laugh! I've had a rat run over my foot in a pizza restaurant in BKK before. The old On Nut night market use to be crawling with them after the bars closed, all over the tables, it was like a sea of rats, still didn't put me off my beer, close though 555.

@RichardColeman I am starting to think the same thing.

If thais can find the flights are they actually allowed to leave? What do you think the chances of your wife getting a visa are at the moment ?

An indication for bad hygiene is the prevalence of Hepatitis A.

No European country is dirtier than Thailand, most are cleaner.

This guy urgently needs a reality check.

How about the real reason being many Thai's cannot afford to travel abroad at this moment in time ..........!!!

Well if USA would have had the Asian attitude and did physical distancing, maybe

even some more mask wearing even when they were not looting during the

protests, then maybe they would have not the big numbers as they have today.

News Flash, 50 thousand more cases in the country just today.  Wow America, isn't

it time to grow up and act like adults, not like a ficticius character of Homer Simpson.

It is not time to be STUPID, unless of course you just want to die. Get smart and

make an attempt to get the virus under control. Jeez!

I am glad that Thailand and Asia have low numbers and are letting domestic

tourism happen. Keep the USA and some of South America people out of

Thailand until there is a vaccine.

Or visas.

I for one would not travel overseas at present and am happy to stay here in Thailand

Thailand is safe unlike the US, UK etc etc and I can see no valid reason to let their visitors into Thailand and risk possible problems here

The high incident of covid 19 in Europe and the USA is a clear indication that hygiene standards are low

You are a little under it is actually over 57,000 cases on July 2nd (+57,236)and yesterday’s number was just over 51,000

The high incidence in Europe and USA is more likely due to FAR MORE testing than countries like Thailand who have not even tested 1% of their population and declare themselves basically virus free and appear not to test any of the 8,000 people that die every day anyway

On 28-29 June 2020 at 20.00, Thailand announced that 1,918 additional people met the criteria for PUI, raising the total to 309,371 PUI, as shown in Table 1.

Go to a supermarket or food shop anywhere in Europe. Watch how they handle unpacked food. I have the same rule in Europe as I have in any 3rd world country: don't eat what you can't cook or peel.

A tough one for me as it is now berry and apricot season where I am.

Japanese aren't going to europe.  If they leave they aren't allowed back in Japan, full stop.  In Thailand they've demonstrated their draconian rules keeping their own citizens out and I doubt anyone is going from here too.

Can you not see how these openings aren't really news at all?  Fling the borders open, nobody will come.  Europe is DEAD, even though it's open right now.

Tourism is dead till this goes away or there's a vaccine.

People Under Investigation (PU) is not confirmed infection.

America's figures are confirmed disease carriers.
