Trump repeats vow to defeat 'radical left' in July Fourth speech

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday vowed to defeat the "radical left," in an Independence Day speech at the White House that condemned recent protests against monuments to historical figures as attempts to destroy the United States.

 

Trump claimed without evidence that 99% of coronavirus cases in the United States were "totally harmless." In fact, many states marked a record number of new COVID-19 cases. In Texas alone, 7,890 patients were hospitalized after 238 new admissions over the past 24 hours.

 

Trump, who has faced criticism over his handling of the pandemic, said China must be "held accountable" for failing to contain the disease.

 

The administration held a fireworks display over the National Mall as night fell after Trump's speech, despite Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser's warnings that the mass spectator event would defy health officials' guidance during the pandemic.

 

Just steps from where Trump spoke, peaceful protesters marched down blocked-off streets around the White House, Black Lives Matter Plaza and the Lincoln Memorial. They were confronted by counter-protesters chanting, "USA! USA!" but there were no reports of violence.

 

Millions of Americans have been demonstrating against police brutality and racial inequality since the May 25 killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. In addition to achieving police reforms in some cities, some protesters have removed Confederate statues and other symbols of America's legacy of slavery.

 

"There have always been those who seek to lie about the past in order to gain power in the present, those that are lying about our history, those who want us to be ashamed of who we are," Trump said on Saturday. "Their goal is demolition."

 

Trump's Fourth of July remarks doubled down on his speech the previous evening at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota where he accused "angry mobs" of trying to erase history and painted himself as a bulwark against left-wing extremism.

 

Just months before November's presidential election, opinion polls in key states show Trump trailing his Democratic rival, former Vice President Joe Biden. Biden wrote a Fourth of July opinion piece that struck a contrasting note with the Republican president and accused him of finding "new ways to tarnish and dismantle our democracy" every day.

 

In a separate letter to donors, Biden said: "We have a chance now to give the marginalized, the demonized, the isolated, the oppressed, a full share of the American dream."

 

Trump, in his speech, also said the United States would have a vaccine or therapeutic solution to the virus "long before" the end of 2020. Such a success could help the U.S. economy and Trump's chances of re-election.

On Thursday, a top U.S. health official said he was optimistic the Trump administration’s vaccine-acceleration program “Operation Warp Speed” will generate a safe and effective vaccine for COVID-19 by year-end.

 

Apart from fireworks spectators in Washington, activists of different stripes also appeared willing to disregard health warnings.

 

Roar of the Deplorables, a bikers group, said via social media that they planned to gather to protest against what they call "the anti-Trump regime" and celebrate the nation's birthday.

 

Freedom Fighters DC, a new activist group which seeks to rally ethnically diverse supporters, especially the Black population of Washington, is one of the anti-racism groups ignoring the mayor's heed to refrain from gathering.

 

"Black folks are not free from the chains of oppression, so we don't get to truly celebrate Independence Day," said Kerrigan Williams, 22, one of the founders of the group, which will host a march and an arts demonstration on Saturday afternoon.

 

"We're marching today to showcase that Black folks are still fighting for the simple liberties that the constitution is said to provide."

The far right white supremacists, like Donald Trump's father, the Bush family and other Republicans were supporting Hitler from the 30s and helped Hitler rise to power. Companies such as Standard Oil (Bush family) supplied oil, General Motors and Ford supplied vehicles, IBM supplied machines, others supplied aircraft designs and aeroengines. Without the United States far-right and American Nazi Party support there not have been for so many soldiers to have died and without fuel and badly need financial and armanent support I doubt if there would have been a WWII. The United States only switched sides on December 7th 1941 after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. The States (The most successful, creative and tolerant ethnicity). have been waging war all over the world since the 17th century almost without stop. Many of the wars were against the American Indians, the Mexicans (where they grabbed hold of part of Mexico which is now California) and other territories in the South which were Spanish or French. And Trump's supporters demand that the peoples of the South who speak Spanish should speak English! Trump wants to invade Iran, but is in love with Kim Jong Eun so he is off the list. I was recruited by the U.S. Army as part of the Iraq invasion force and was in Libya when they decided to topple Ghadafi on a made up charge. I got the warning from Haliburton that they intended to take Ghadafi down. Most of the wars have been to attack countries with huge oil reserves such as Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya and currently focused on Venezuela. Osama Bin Laden worked for the United States and was trained by the CIA to form a terrorist fighting group to fight the Russians in Afghanistan. This later became Al Qaeda and led to 9/11 and also gave rise to ISIS/ISIL. Trump and Pompeo have investments in arms manufacturers such as Raytheon (Mother of All Bombs etc) He needs war to line his pockets and those of his supporters. P.S. There is no "Radical Far-left in the United States. The ideals of the Dems are no different to the right of centre, Tory party in the UK and other parts of Europe. Trump must lose "Biggly".

I can't quite figure out who these 'forefathers' are, because in the United States with which I am familiar, 45 would be anathema to its forefathers, and is anathema to those who have served and sacrificed for the ideals about which he has absolutely no knowledge or understanding.

 

The 1st Amendment of the US Constitution states the following, which I include here for non-Americans who may not be familiar with what the Founders thought so important to the new nation that they put in the very first wording of the new Constitution:

 

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances".

 

Those words set out basic human rights which the new government fully intended to affirm and recognize. Those freedoms form the very foundation of the country and the democracy that blossomed, and for which many have sacrificed as all work toward perfecting a society where---as stated in the Declaration of Independence---ALL are equal.

 

45 has consistently stood against those rights and freedoms. He has regularly used totalitarian verbiage to show his personal distaste for press freedom by calling the Free Press 'the Enemy of the People'. He ordered the violent removal of peaceful protesters---'the right of the people to peaceably assemble'---just so he could do a photo-op and even as an ostensible leader in a nation guaranteed freedom of, or from religion (almost all of the Founders were atheists) hold up---upside down---one book important to one particular faith.  45 has also called peaceful protesters 'human scum', while he has called those who chant racist and antisemitic slogans 'very fine people'.

 

45 has even remained silent as word has surfaced that Russia offers bounties on US servicepeople who---unlike 45---go into harm's way on behalf of the US. No comment, other than his usual 'hoax', has come out and zero action has been taken to make those who offer bounties pay a price. This failure to stand up for those who fight for our freedom has not gone unnoticed by those who serve and have served. Never in 244 years has any POTUS ever shown such utter contempt for true patriots.

 

Our democracy is now under threat because hostile foreign nations have interfered, and continue to interfere, in our electoral process, and 45---along with Senate Republican leadership---have stood squarely in the way of measures aimed at blocking such interference. In addition, not only has 45 openly, on video, called for foreign interference in US elections, he is alleged to have done so privately and repeatedly according to writings of one of his former National Security Advisers.

 

The threat to American democracy is clear, and it is 45. Even many former right wing Republicans have seen the threat and have become quite vocal in denouncing 45's attacks on American freedoms and ideals, such as free speech and press freedom. These Republican voices have joined the many former Generals and Admirals---all who honorably and bravely served the nation---in saying that the greatest threat to the US democracy is none other than 45.

 

The very continued existence of the United States depends on his defeat in November, lest a powerful voice that demanded total human equality for the first time in all of human history be silenced.

I think the puppet masters write Trumps speeches and he has no idea of the content or the message being sent. Like the uneducated person he is he delivers the speech without any knowledge of the true content.

He then plays the role of the stable genius and digs himself further into the mire putting off more voters even some from his own "solid" base. Maybe when he has the orange suit on he may be able to spend sometime getting a basic education and learn the real art of communication, understanding and compassion.

The increasingly divisive gulf between left and right has been a feature of European politics for some time, it long predates Trump. With the export of ANTIFA to the USA from Europe we now see this in the USA as well.

 

I believe the people in the USA are exhausted from the ANTIFA led vandalism and destruction.

Yah, I've seen the approval ratings of Trump. Polls have a history of being wrong, we will see if they are accurate come election time.

I can’t agree with you that division is not resulted from divisive innuendos by Trump. 
 

Anti fascism originated before the 2WW and became a movement in US in the 1980s against neo Nazi skinheads. Since then Antifa petered out and was only resurrected by Hannity and took on another lease of life by Trump. Steven Miller will most likely in the mix to goad Trump to blame that movement to fire up his supporters and to divert attention from his poor performance in leading the fight against COVID-19. 
 

IMO, taking on this topic is counter productive for his election chance. Majority support BLM and there are very little direct evidence of Antifa trying to take down the government. Educated public also understand that radical left is too extreme a connotation to current malaise.

I don't think anyone has claimed that divisions in America were caused by Trump.  But many believe that Trump has made it worse...much worse.

That's one arrest,  Where are the reports of hundreds / thousands of politically inspired organised fellow travellers who would be required to represent a national security threat to the USA that trump rants about.
